What would a Gaudreau bridge deal look like?
I am not particularly concerned about the Flames signing Gaudreau, but given some of the speculation surrounding his contract negotiations, what if the two sides were unable to hammer out a long term deal? Assuming no UFA years bought (but still RFA at the conclusion).
I am starting to think that this wouldn't be a bad outcome, if the sticking point is the price tag on UFA years 4-5 years out.

You're then talking 9.5M+/8Y for the next deal though.

4 x 5.25. And I wouldn't be happy about it.

Some of these cap hits are way too high for a bridge deal. RFA players get $6+M if a team buys UFA years. Look at the Subban, Johannsen, Duchene bridge deals. Subban and Duchene got paid and Johanssen likely does as well

You being Johnny or you being management?
I would guess a little higher AAV. My guess is around the Monahan AAV, which I would be fine with. The next contract would be a monster if Gaudreau is a top 5 player, which is fine, because, you know, he is a top 5 player.

Not really. Gaudreau was sixth in league scoring. Not many bridge deal guys in recent years have even approached that.

Me being me, a fan, because I really don't want a bridge deal.

Not exactly a bridge deal, but since most want 8 years, i would be happy with 6 years at $6.75 million per.

This is the route I would like the Flames to go. 8 years at around $7.5 million is a bit much for a small winger IMO. I'd rather see them sign him 2 years for an AAV of 6 to 6.5 and then see how things play out. The only way I see Johnny demanding much more than $7.5 in 2 years is if the Cap goes way up or his production stays around the same or improves. If either of those situations happen the Flames would be happy as they would get a huge benefit with the rest of their core locked up on very good deals or Johnny scores 80+ for the next 2 years and proves to be a legit Art Ross Candidate every year
If Johnny gets hurt, doesn't improve on his numbers, the team does not improve with him as the go to guy or he does not perform well in playoffs I could see him at most demanding $7.5 to $8.5 million in 2 years. I'm ok with taking a chance on him having a $8.5 mil cap hit in 2 years to get him for 2 more years at less than 7

I think this is what is so interesting. Subban's bridge deal was way less, but I am not sure what he showed prior to signing.

That is a worst case deal IMO. Only buying 1 UFA year

That is not a terrible deal as we still hold RFA rights at the end of the contract. Way better than a 6 year deal

Fair enough. Perhaps not a first choice, but I don't see the bridge deal as being a terrible thing.
