Icon48 LeBrun: NHL Expansion Draft Parameters Discussion ‘Contentious’

Sounds like Bettman is pushing for an expansion draft with rules that will allow expansion teams to pluck nice young players from other teams.

http://www.todaysslapshot.com/from-t...n-contentious/

Quote:
“The other thing is that one of the real contentious discussions so far as the executive committee level is the actual parameters of an expansion draft, and how that would look like, because Gary Bettman wants an expansion draft to be better than ever before. He wants the new team or teams to reflect the parity of the NHL. He doesn’t want them to be near the bottom of the standings for five years, like has traditionally been the case with most expansion teams in the last 20 years.

“So because of that, what the executive committee has been shown as the original ideas from the league for an expansion draft has them being exposed and losing some pretty good players.”
Quote:
“One GM said to me he saw the proposed rules and he goes, ‘You could lose one of your best young players under what’s being proposed right now.’

Maybe this is why the league didnt rig the last draft so that the Oilers couldnt draft McDavid.

A sort of kick in the nuts.

"Oh, you thought you had McDavid? Well now hes in Vegas!"

McDavid: "Thank God!"

Good god.

I do not like the way that sounds. I need clarification so I can scream and rant appropriately, rather than screaming and ranting inappropriately.

Honestly, for fans of rebuilding clubs, that is just awful.

You would probably lose your 2nd or 3rd best prospect.

Send to Mcdavid to Vegas, watch Edmontonians burn the city down. I wouldn't be opposed.

Because of the salary cap, they're going to have to expose some younger talent. You can't just saddle an expansion franchise with a bunch of horrible contracts and bad players.

But I can't imagine the rules not allowing the us to protect all of Brodie, Dougie, Bennett, Monahan and Johnny.

Really curious to see what this looks like

This is why I hate expansion. Your odds of winning the Cup drop even more, and you lose quality players to the new franchises. Seriously, what's in it for fans of existing teams?

If this happens, the new expansion teams would instantly have the two best prospect pools in the NHL. Seems pretty ridiculous to me, as the new team's 3rd-15th ranked guys would be way better than the average team's 3rd-15th, to the point where a team like Calgary who has few blue chippers would get royally screwed over. 1OA and 2OA is more than enough to start.

Why can't they do it as they always have? For every Columbus or Atlanta, there is a success story like San Jose or Tampa. Even Florida was very competitive right off the bat, but bad management did them in. Ottawa was terrible, but then they were one of the best teams in the league in under a decade. Why shouldn't new teams pay their dues?

Get ready to lose Poirier and Klimchuk, maybe even Gillies, if this is the way they go. Just absurd. Let the new teams succeed or fail on their own merits. There is a plethora of hard working vets out there that can't fit on existing teams due to their contracts, that could comprise a semi-competitive team right off the bat. There is more talent available than any other point in history, stripping teams of their top prospects would be totally over the top. Why should an expansion team get a better chance at success than the long suffering fans of teams like Columbus or even Calgary?

Gives me probably the only excuse I would ever take to actually go to Vegas?

Also, unless you are fan of Montreal or Toronto, your team was once an expansion team.

The current 30 teams will get millions in expansion fees, more then ever before. I do hope that there will be some decent players available. I would also like for the "new teams" to be able to draft players two years before the team is due to start playing, giving them a better prospect base.

I could see there being limits on how many players you could protect based on either age, experience, years pro, or something like that. 15 players under 25, 5 aged 25- 30 and 5 over 30. It was so long ago I don't remember what the rules were for the last expansion draft, and what about players with no movement clauses?

EDIT: Well here it is, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_NHL_Expansion_Draft it looks like only NHL roster players were eligible to be drafted

That is total BS.

The expansion teams should be bad for a couple seasons. A good management structure should be able to make their team good quickly. Minnesota made the playoffs after only 2-3 years.

With the cap, they can acquire talent more easily as well.

See, that makes sense. I don't have a problem with them entering the draft, and even being awarded top-10 picks, for a couple years before they enter the league.

And the floor. They'd have to overpay for vets at the outset, but they'd have a decent team just from unprotected vets, picking the cream of the UFA crop, and making a couple aggressive RFA bids. But expecting them to be competitive right off the hop is folly.

How is this fair to a rebuild team like Calgary doing it right? What a joke.

No chance the Oilers would lose McDavid, that's ridiculous.

It'd be whittled down to where teams have to pick something like 5-10 players to protect, including players on ELCs that were previously exempt from the expansion draft.

For reference, in 2000 the protection choices were either:
  • 1 goalie, 5 D, 9 F
  • 2 goalies, 3 D, 7 F

hmm perhaps with the new rules, a player will have to have played a certain number of games before his team can protect him? That's just a thought I guess, it would lead to the expansion team having an unreasonable number of really talented young players.

This is the crux of the issue. We have to go through years of losing to get where we are but two new teams get handed years worth of former top draft picks right off the bat? I refuse to believe it will play out like this.

Every other time in history the existing teams basically haven't been affected at all.
