Icon48 Players Tribune: "A guy like me" - John Scott

http://www.theplayerstribune.com/a-guy-like-me/

Scott claims he firmed up on his decision on going to the All Star game when a representative from the NHL asked him "“Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of?” in an attempt to convince him not to go.

Quote:
So when someone from the NHL calls me and says, “Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of?”

… That’s when they lost me.

That was it, right there. That was the moment.

Because, while I may not deserve to be an NHL All-Star, I know I deserve to be the judge of what my kids will — and won’t — be proud of me for.

Classic NHL. Their all-star voting system has been exploiting for what 3-4 years in a row and they still don't fix it and instead pressure this year's player to drop out.

I was on the fence about Scott being at the ASG but if it's a big F U to the league, then I'm all about it after that read

That was great and I'm glad he shared his story. I'm sure the we'll find out who 'the guy from the NHL' was eventually.

I think voting him in was stupid but its not his fault

people who basically voted him the worst player in the NHL are now mad at the NHL for embarrassing him should take a long hard look

Whats done is done, hope he enjoys himself...he has likely played his last NHL contest so might as well go out in style

From all the recent unsealed e-mails, I wouldn't be surprised if it was Colin Campbell.

The same guy currently deciding what to do about Dennis Wideman.

His wife is 9 months pregnant with twins? I sure hope (and believe) the Flames organization would not trade a player in such a situation. Pretty low-class of Arizona regardless of the whole All-Star thing.

Wow, that was so well-written. Really glad to hear what he had to say about this whole kerfuffle. The picture of him with his daughter is amazing.

These Players Tribune stories are great. This one really makes you like John Scott. A lot of parallels between him and Grats - league enforcers who are teddy bears at heart.

I don't begrudge his participation at the ASG and hope he has a great experience - for all the long shots who never will be there!

Gotta say: I was a big critic of Scott going and a defender of how everything went down.

I feel differently now, great read, and a good reminder that I think a lot of people here (including myself) could use: these players are people. Whether you're talking about Scott, Wideman, Raymond, Colborne, Etc. These are human beings and while you have every right to judge their play on the ice, we have NO right to judge these people as humans and even BEGIN to know what they're thinking.

It's a lesson so many fans need to learn.
I look forward to cheering Scott on this weekend, and I'm glad he's part of the Pacific team.

Yah, shame on the NHL for trying to make him not go. It may have started out as a joke, but what's done is done, and the NHL should honor it, and the media should just embrace it for what it is. Its entirely the NHL's fault for having the voting system, so they should have to live with any unexpected outcomes it entails.

I was really disappointed with Hrudey's take on it a couple weeks back when he was saying Scott should apologize for going, since he's taking up a spot for someone more deserving. Who's more deserving than the guy who got the most fan votes?
