“The boys wanna be her. The girls wanna be her. I wanna be her. So do you!”
So go the lyrics to just one of Peaches’ empowering and endlessly listenable songs. This has grown to be an apt description for the larger-than-life artist herself. In the 16 years she’s been releasing albums under this name, the icon born Merrill Nisker has bared it all—both literally and figuratively. Primarily using rhymes and electronic beats, she is never beholden to anything but her own irresistible swagger and unabashed body politics.
Throughout her life she’s worn many hats. Leaving behind a career as a librarian, Peaches has used music, film, theatre and many other disciplines to challenge and delight the public on identity issues including sex, gender and power. What makes this all so important is that she has proven that liberating yourself (and getting pissed off at the systems that aim to inhibit us) can be a hell of a lot of fun.
From the pervasive power of Teaches of Peaches single “#### the Pain Away” to the recent sexually-celebrant title track of Rub, Peaches has never ceased to push as hard as she can to destroy the barriers that keep expression of self in line. She’s a provocateur and a punk, an assault and an icon. She’s the loudest voice with the most to say. For these reasons and so many more, Sled Island is proud to collaborate with her in the role of guest curator.

“As far as live performances go, she’s so incredible,” says Salvi of the musician who has worked with everyone from Iggy Pop and Kim Gordon to Calgary’s own Feist, and who is currently promoting her sixth album Rub, which she released in September.
The festival will begin unveiling the rest of the lineup for its 10th anniversary year on Feb. 9, with the release of the first 15 to 20 headliners.
It should only raise the profile of the snot-nosed punk of Calgary’s festival scene, one that started off on the fringes 10 years ago and has grown into one of the true gems of the region’s musical and artistic landscape.
And, on top of that, it’s also become a notable economic contributor to the city, as a recently released economic impact assessment produced by the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance and for Tourism Calgary showed that last year’s event generated $3.4 million in economic activity for the province.
Hah, Peaches. Amazing. Her show will be crazy and I think she will definitely put her mark on Sled. You are going to be able to tell she was involved. Great move by Sled. I think Peaches will be able to generate a buzz for the festival, similar to what Andrew W.K. did. I think the unfortunate part of having a band like GSYBE curate is that they don't talk to anyone. I expect Peaches to be loud and proud.
Peaches completely blew my mind when I first hear her (granted, I was ~10 y/o), all I could think to myself after seeing the "#### the pain away" music video was "what the hell kind of music was that?", "Am I going to be in trouble for watching that?" and "Are people even allowed to do that, why is no one stopping her?"
We're proud to share that in conjunction with today’s announcement, legendary lo-fi indie rock band Guided By Voices have announced a reunion that will include a stop at the festival. The band will headline Sled Island’s main outdoor show at Olympic Plaza on June 25, 2016 in what is their only date announced thus far, and their first-ever appearance in Calgary. Guided By Voices have been a bucket list act for the festival since day one, and we couldn't be more thrilled to be the first to confirm a show for the reunited band. They’ll be joined by indie rock icons Built To Spill (who return to Sled Island following a memorable show in 2010), krautrock-inspired experimenters SUUNS and additional artists to be announced.
Also appearing at the festival is boundary-pushing black metal band Deafheaven, 1960s garage-rock pioneers The Sonics, enchanting indie-folk songwriter Angel Olsen, left-field pop experimentalist Julia Holter, industrial dance noisemakers HEALTH (returning to the festival after an appearance in 2009), genre-defying instrumentalists Tortoise, venomous post-punk band Protomartyr and unpredictable psych adventurers (and project of Throbbing Gristle frontperson Genesis Breyer P-Orridge) Psychic TV.
Even more bands joining this one-of-a-kind lineup include jazz trailblazers Dawn Of Midi, gunk punk legends New Bomb Turks, hooky garage-punk rockers Radioactivity and Montreal electro-rock favourites Duchess Says.
Recently, Sled Island announced provocative musician/producer/filmmaker/performance artist Peaches as 2016 guest curator. Each year, Sled Island’s guest curator puts their stamp on the festival through special programming choices and with their presence at the event. Peaches’ curatorial selections will be announced in the coming months, along with additional festival acts.
Wow that is a really good lineup so far. Couldn't care less about GBV, but Deafheaven, The Sonics, HEALTH and Protomartyr should all be pretty awesome. I'll have to check out the rest of those bands too

Seems like Radioactivity and Built to Spill play at the same time. Hopefully Radioactivity is playing the pig roast. They seem like a pretty obvious choice for it.
