Uber to Resume in Calgary December 6 2016

		| After over a year of research and planning, the ride-sharing program which allows drivers and passengers to connect through their phone, will hit the road at 2 p.m. Thursday.
Calgary businessman and philanthropist Brett Wilson will also be part of the inaugural ride at 8 a.m. as part of the launch.

Radit Kar, General Manager of UBER Alberta said to date, there are roughly 500 Calgary drivers and tens of thousands registered passengers, as company representatives have met with the mayor’s office.

UBER exists already in 30 Canadian municipalities, including Edmonton, which launched the service nine months ago.

Finally.

I support it, once we bring in regulations similar to what edmonton just brought in. As of right now they are just a taxi service that ignores the current laws. Even if those laws make no sense, it is only fair to follow them until they are changed.

Some competition will be good for the industry, the prices for taxis in this town are outrageous.

The timing is ace for me. I'm out of the country and, upon return, will need a taxi from the airport back home.
Is Uber cheaper than a cab?

Ditto. I support the idea of what Uber is trying to do. Problem is, Uber itself is completely evil. Personally, I won't touch them at all. Not as long as they pretend they are anything but a Taxi service and not as long as most of their drivers are actually operating without a proper drivers license or any valid insurance.

Used Uber in Edmonton, driver offered us candy and bottled water, and actually conversed with us like a normal human being and not a creep. The service is 10x better than taxies.

Rates are set by the city. Competition won't change that, and Uber will often be more expensive than a traditional cab anyway.

What has changed since the last time they did the "fake launch" and couldn't offer rides without them being technically free?

But available! No more waiting hours for a cab.

Didn't realize it will still be taxi rates. Maybe I'll drive for uber if I get a layoff this year or next.

The problem is the governments won't change/update their laws until Uber comes in like this. If they waited for governments to changes their policies they'd probably be operating in three cities worldwide.

So they are just gonig to say screw it, and break the law? Should we be encouraging this?
link to Livery transport bylaw:
https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j...97949915,d.cGU
The law they are clearly breaking, whether they understand it or not, is this part:

	Quote:

		| No Person shall charge a fare or fee to carry passengers or offer to carry passengers for a fare or fee unless the Motor Vehicle used or to be used has a valid T.P.L.,
A.T.P.L. or L.P.L. joined to it.
 |
So their claim that "We are in an unregulated space," doesn't really seam to hold any sort of water. It's regulated, and they are flouting it. It seams pretty straight forward.

I hate the taxi system in this city as much as anyone else, I just don't think a multi-billion dollar company should be able to walk in and do whatever they want. We have laws. If you don't like them work to change them.
