Why Waste Your Rookies?
Ran into this article that I thought was interesting; Mentions Monahan specifically as well.
TL;DR always send down your 18 and 19 years regardless of how good they are.
Quote:
The list of players who are NHL-ready at 18 or 19 years old is really not very long at all. More often than not, sure, someone who's the first overall pick or something is for-sure 100 percent able to play in the NHL and be competitive. Far less often, though, someone who's, say, a mid-first or even high-second round pick makes a club and is capable enough.

I think it's a reasonably safe bet that Monahan would have been sent back to Junior under Treliving. Regardless salary considerations from a Flames perspective, it certainly didn't hurt his development, imo

Also why the hell does this article mention Monahan and not Barkov/Lindholm (players picked ahead of Monahan, who had less points)

Send them down as a general rule but if someone performs so well that you can't, then so be it. Monahan was an exception...you have to consider the message it sends if a guy is NHL ready and playing lights out and you send him down.

Monahan played wing last year? Seems like this guy was just looking at stats. Just because rookies don't score .6 ppg doesn't mean they aren't developing; and how many of these 18/19 year old rookies he is going on about were defenceman?

Combining the above two quotes makes me question this article's author.

Ya I didn't think Monahan played on the wing last year either.
One thing the article doesn't talk about is getting fans to buy tickets.

The article doesn't really even mention the main reason teams keep these guys up and that is for development reasons. A year of practicing and playing in the NHL is most likely going to develop a player a lot more than dominating junior as a 19 year old.

Both sides can be argued. Get a lot of tough minutes against easier opponents can be helpful rather than sheltered minutes in the NHL. Especially since a lot of 18 year olds need to develop physically more than anything.

Monahan earned his roster spot with the big club, plain and simple. How would it look to our other young guys if management gave them the "Earned, not given" mantra then proceeded to send rookies down for contract reasons regardless of their performance? And that author even gives an even more valid reason for keeping Monahan up right in his own article
Quote:
Monahan — who in my book has improved significantly for this year
|
Yes he has improved, specifically because he has a full NHL season under his belt. He wasn't going to learn anything more at the junior level, so what would have been the point of sending him back? What a stupid article

I agree that it didn't hurt his development, in fact I believe he is a much better player today, this season, then he would have been if he returned to junior.
This is a catch 22, if you don't give the guys experience, how will they ever experience the rigors of the nhl for a whole season? I have no issues with how he was sheltered, no matter if a rookie comes in at age 22 or 18, you shelter them until they can handle themselves.
I don't care about burning 1 year of his ELC, it was worth it with him, not for everyone, but for Monahan it was not a mistake. Bennett will likely don the flames uniform this season (if rehab goes well) and likely won't be sent down and I am ok with that. As long as he can excel with the sheltered time he is on the ice and can gain valuable experience at the NHL level, I have no issue with that.

Hartley said that Bennett would of started the season with the Flames. He didn't have as good as training camp as Monahan had last year (point wise) and Monahan was great in his first 9 games last year.
Treliving may have said that, but it doesn't mean he would of sent Monahan back.
