No, he's right. You didn't disprove one thing he said about Monahan.

Monahan is fine. I don't know if Tre can find him a new home but I hope he can. Monahan can still bring back some value in a trade. I believe Calgary has been wanting to move him out in a trade for the last couple of seasons. I hope Tre can find the right deal for him.

Outside of the 18/19 season, he has been consistently a 60 point guy. He is an elite goal scorer, but some of that can be attributed to playing with Gaudreau.

The real knock against Monahan isn't his offense though, it's his defensive play. If he was a proficient defensive player you could live with 60 points and 25 goals. But he isn't, especially when going up against the other teams top line.

When he was drafted his rep was as a defensively capable C. If Sutter can get him to up the intensity and play a strong defensive game he would be a worthwhile top 6 forward (see Lindholm). Monahan did play much better D under Sutter, but his offense dried up. Maybe with a full camp and a fresh start he can find the balance.

First of all, his GAF meter is off the charts! The guy plays through considerable pain just to try and help his team win. I think you confuse his calm demeanor with not caring. I think he has an A on his shirt for a reason. Sutter had nothing but praise for the guy, and I don't think it's a coincidence. I also think he spent a large chunk of the last couple of seasons trying to improve his physical and defensive play. I can fault the guy for a lot of things(hockey wise) but caring is not one of them.

Now as for his passing, I think he can generate offense with his passing. I think you need to rewatch some of the highlights from 2018-19 or 2017-18. Gaudreau wasn't the only one generating offense. Their line had a bunch of tic tac toe goals.

His faceoffs are at least above average. He constantly takes face-offs against the other team's best guys. Winning half of the draws is above average in itself.

I agree about defensive play, especially when defending a cycle a line with Monahan and Gaudreau was borderline useless last season. A lot of chasing around on Monahan's part without much to show for it. In fact, most of the times I saw the Flames get trapped in their own zone(last season) it was Monahan's line.

I honestly think the biggest limitation to Monahan is his quickness and 90% of his development being tied to Gaudreau.

His physicality is overblown. He still goes to the hard areas.

He's had the hockey sense, the vision and the shot to be a top flight center, but in a league that gets faster every year, he's limited on the impact he can make at center.

If he was allowed to develop away from Gaudreau, I think he would have become a much more well rounded player.

On a different topic than Monahan. What do you guys think about someone like Ryan Donato to round out the bottom 6? or will the Flames leave a spot for a prospect to take if he outplays Ritchie.

Also, any bets on which player(s) would sign a PTO with the Flames? I'm thinking Stone, maybe Frolik(if Tre isn't too pissed at his agent), or maybe someone like Virtanen or Gusev? After all, it's not like there's any risk in a PTO.

0% chance on Frolik I would say.

I thought he was a pretty good player for the Flames. I also thought he was decent for MTL when he played. I think he is a very solid defensive player, that showed chemistry with several forwards we already have. That said, I agree with you that it's a bridge that is likely burned, especially with his agent's comments in his last season here.

Or he might have become Dylan Strome.

James Neal. Just for the satisfaction of cutting him.

Would love virtanen on the Flames, feisty player who put up some decent points from the backend. Had a couple tough years but I like the gamble. Reminds me of a defenseman version of versteeg.

I don’t even imagine what this place would be like if that happened.

Problem with Ryan Donato is he's not the right type of player for the bottom six, and he doesn't score enough for the top 6, which is why he's still available.

I’ve always liked Donato, back to when he was with Boston. He’s a hard worker with some offense. He’s never seemed to get proper footing in order to fully develop, but there’s a player there IMO.

I'm pretty sure Vatanen will get a contract soon. I really doubt he is a PTO. I can see him or Gustafsson being a good option for the 3rd pairing.

Not calling into sick isn't the same as working your balls off when you get there.

Showing some enthusiasm, finding an extra gear when the situation calls for it, making that desperate attempt on a back check, protecting your team mates, and doing the things to generate energy for yourself and your team are important. The fact that Monahan has an A echoes the on ice culture of this team.

For the record, my post wasn't intended to bash Monahan. It is simply an acknowledgement that he isn't an elite offensive C and he can't get away with shoddy defense. I was also trying to articulate that I think Sutter can and will be good for Monahan. Sutter obviously likes Monahan, and he is working on developing Monahan's defense.

Yes, I always saw him as more of a Czarnik/Leivo type in terms of offense. He definitely might not work out, but I think he can still play with speed and generate chances. I had very limited viewings of him, but the times I did watch I liked what I saw. He is also only 25, and there might be more there. I think the only reason he didn't get a qualifying offer this year was because his qualifying offer of $2.15M was too high for what he brings.

Yeah, I didn't take it as you bashing Monahan. It's all good. I still think that Monahan does get into scrums, at least he's trying to hold onto a guy since he's not a fighter. As for doing the extra desperate attempt on a back check, he did have those, but they were just rarely successful. I thought he had an extra gear in the first couple of playoff series(which were a very long time ago). He even had 5pts in 4 games with good possession numbers in 16-17, but the Flames were swept so it didn't do them much good.

I simply can't accept the narrative that the guy doesn't care. I think he is doing everything his coaches ask him to do to the best of his ability. That ability does seem to have it's limits, as he seems to be getting worse as a player. This might or might not be a result of his body breaking down on him. Again I'm not 100% sure, but he doesn't strike me as a guy that is okay with losing.

So what I have read is that Vancouver now has ~16.5 million to sign both Pettersson and Hughes after the Dickinson signing.

An OS could truly bone them. Not sure how they wound up in such a terrible position.
