Goldwater Institute attorney Nick Dranias appeared on KFYI's Jim Sharpe Show to update listeners on the latest in the Glendale-Coyotes situation, including a suspicious parking rights document uncovered by the Goldwater Institute.

3) When Will Then Be Now? Winnipeg has a breaking point and sources say that mark isn't far off as the city and True North await word from the National Hockey League as to what direction it intends to go with the Phoenix Coyotes.

True North has been incredibly patient, but doesn't want the waiting game they're involved in to drag on much longer. Sources say the league is well aware of Winnipeg's timing concerns, but the NHL remains committed to exhausting every conceivable option to keep the Coyotes in Glendale.

Winnipeg hopes to have an answer this week, or prior to next week's American Hockey League spring meeting, although historically, decisions on franchise locations and divisional adjustments can be made after the AHL's annual gathering so there's no real pressure for Winnipeg to declare the status of the Manitoba Moose for next season.

^^^

NHL is screwing both cities and the league in general with the game their playing here.

This is ridiculous. Course a few of us have been saying this for a while.

What happens if the league goes another year in Glendale? Do they really think that will make the situation better?

If you don't want to listen to it The CoG has a signed contract dated Jan 25th, 2011 stating that THEY OWN the parking rights...the same parking rights that they told the bond issuers they needed the $100 million to buy the parking rights from MH for.

Bang the gong in Glendale again

Coyotes vote could be held Tuesday

Package could be brought to Glendale council

By: Gary Lawless
Details of the NHL’s new financing package to keep the Coyotes in Phoenix are beginning to leak out and the package could be brought to City of Glendale council for a vote next Tuesday.
The NHL owns the Coyotes and has been trying to sell them for close to two years.
The league looked to have deal in place earlier this year when Glendale and potential buyer Matthew Hulsizer struck an arrangement that would have seen the city front the Chicago businessman $100 million of the $170-million purchase price.
That deal fell apart when the Goldwater Institute deemed it illegal and threatened to file suit under the terms of Arizona’s gift clause which prevents government from subsidizing private business.
Winnipeg’s True North Sports and Entertainment has been waiting for the NHL to make a decision regarding the Coyotes and is poised to purchase the team and relocate it to Winnipeg.
Glendale pledged to pay Hulsizer $97 million in arena management fees over a five year period - also seen to be illegal by Goldwater.
The new package could contain a $50 million bond issue from the city directed to Hulsizer’s purchase, according to a report in the Phoenix Business Journal. Hulsizer would increase his initial investment from $70 million to just over $100 million.
The NHL would drop its asking price by as much as $25 million but make up its giveback in deferred payments.
Glendale would need to release details of the agreement on Friday in order to vote on it at next Tuesday’s regularly scheduled council session.

it just boggles my mind the amount of hoops, contortions and financial gymnastics the CoG is willing to go thru to keep the team there - in some ways they need to study the city of wpg more closely to learn how a city can live and actually thrive without a hockey team.

as a reminder, the arena is wpg is a busy place and surely all the acts that don't want to visit wpg would gladly stop in arizona..........

i think if i was a CoG taxpayer - i be pretty pissed about the direction the mayor is taking the city in.......

Good. Glad to hear that it's looking more and more like the Coyotes will be staying in Arizona.

I'm astonished that you would come to this conclusion after reading these recent articles.

Care to provide an actual argument, or is this yet another case of you not actually knowing what you're talking about and instead parroting what you read somewhere on the internet?

It's all looking more and more like a big game of chicken about who is going to pay for the team, the city or Hulsizer. It'll get sorted out one or the other.

If Winnipeg was really getting a team, they'd have announced it by now.

Disagree, its still early.... League has more time in my opinion before they reach the point where something has to be finalized.

Wow, care to read my post? I even quoted what was illegal about it. Jesus Christ, I had no idea the pro-Phoenix camp was this thick.

The report suggests there might be $50 million in CoG bond sales directed to Hulsizer's purchase. To GWI, it doesn't matter if it's $100 million or $50 million - it's still an illegal subsidy and it will be challenged.

Those acts do stop in Arizona. The problem is that there are so many arenas and facilities available in the metro that this arena is massively under utilized. It isn't like Winnipeg where there is only one facility.

And yes, the taxpayers should be pissed, as Glendale was far too small, and stuck in far too saturated a market to be playing the big arena game. That said, they are stuck with it now, and one should not be surprised the city is trying so hard to maintain a top tenant. The Coyotes are the only reason for that rink's existence.
