It may not make it "better" but it makes a difference when he signed it.
As mentioned, he was coming off a starting QB season. Small sample size for sure, but in 9 games, he threw for 300+ yards twice and 400+ once. And as mentioned was extremely accurate at 75%. Not to mention a 2-1 TD to INT ratio. He clearly looked like he was capable of making the jump.

But I agree it was a small sample size and maybe the Stamps rushed to sign him thinking there was shortage of good QB's. And there is. Further, he was the only QB in the pipeline and it seems to me that he was being groomed to take over for BLM.

I’ve always thought the CFL was bulletproof - well over a hundred years old and has survived many problems over the years. Now I’m wondering if it’s on very shaky ground. If the Elks fold (hard to imagine) that could be the first domino to fall. No CFL fan (rivalries aside) should cheer failure because it could topple a league I grew up with. (I’m now hearing a rumour of a wealthy owner buying the Elks.)

Maybe we can have a separate thread for the ongoing doom and gloom about the demise of the CFL?

As long as tsn keeps paying, nobody is folding. And that won’t happen. Tv ratings are good.

Attendance is terrible but I don’t blame people for not going. Tickets are way too expensive and concessions are at nhl levels. Who would take their family to a cfl game when you can go see a movie for half that price even with snacks and drinks?

I think there can be two different aspects to this conversation first whether he should have been signed so early to start with, you make some decent points to why the Stampeders had to risk making the signing.

What I don't think anyone can justify is the price. I have yet to see anything close to justify giving him that level of money. There was no legitimate reason to so vastly overpay for him.

It was a horrible deal at the time of signing and a bad deal now.

It's a horrible deal in the context of this season. But last year he put in starting QB performances. Starting QB's get 400k. That's just how it is.

But it isn't just how it is, the whole conversation started from talking about adding Evans in the offseason, and it was mentioned the Stamps might have had an issue with his contract. BC was able to add him because they had Adams who isn't making close to 400k.

Now I am not a big Adams fan but he showed a hell of a lot more than Maier ever did and BC didn't have to pay him 400k.

VA makes 400k.

Stamps needed to decide which QB they wanted to pay 400k.

Evans and Maier have similar stats.

When I looked it up Adams was making 295k

Evans isn't the answer which is why he was available for trade last season but as an option he is much better than anything we currently have.

They didn't have to decide who to pay 400k they could have decided to pay none of them that money. It isn't like CFL players have ton of leverage especially #### players like Maier and Maier was 100% #### when he signed the contract.

I'm not sure how this is even a conversation worth going back and forth on.

QBs get paid that's the top position in football. When a QB is playing at the level he was he was not singing for pennies I'm not sure what the issue is here. They made the call and he was on an expiring deal he was signed to an extension. There is zero guarantee you are going to sign a player in free agency so the best bet was to keep the guy who you know you can sign.

He might be overpaid but the CFL is easy to negotiate new deals. He really wasn't 100% #### when he signed like you keep pointing out. He was looking like someone who was about to take another step but obviously it's gone south but it happens. Look around the league the best QB is backing up Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville the rest is pretty much garbage.

He wasn't playing well when he signed the deal that is the issue. He didn't look like he was a starting level QB at any point last season. He has never once in his career played like a starting level QB.

I agree it is amazing that there are people that can't just admit it was a bad contract at the time and is a bad contract now.

Riders get lucky with the no call on PI and then the fumble. They will need that tonight to have any chance with Dolegala in for them.

Hope Henderson is ok. That was horrid. Bodies aren’t supposed to bend that way.

That's not a catch, Picton was juggling it and then his right foot hit the sidelines.
