Was Iginla the solution for Pittsburgh, Boston or Colorado?
The reason the Flames never made the playoffs before '03-04 is that they couldn't afford to pay any real players and had to make do with B prospects and castoffs. With the salary cap, that problem doesn't exist anymore. You can't use that as an excuse for Buffalo.
Not giving Buffalo any excuses, they built a terrible team around Eichel

Not disagreeing that Buffalo is terribly managed, or that the cap has significantly improved things.
But it would be incredibly unfair to not acknowledge that all markets, and GM jobs aren’t equal, not even close. It is infinitely more difficult to build a winner in a market like Buffalo, or Calgary, or Edmonton or Columbus etc…. Not for all the same reasons, but so much harder to build a winner in those markets than say Tampa, like not even close regardless of salary cap.

I wouldn’t say that, they had a group of good pieces. Eichel, Reinhardt, Risto, Dahlin and decent supporting players. They suffered from some bad coaching/management and a troubled locker room
How are they better off keeping a player who refuses to play for them?
Just because a players wants to be traded doesn't mean you trade them for a poor return.
Honestly I'd be pretty disappointed as a Sabres fan with the potential return from Calgary as opposed to Anaheim, LA, New York. They all have young high end prospects. The Flames have none. If you had to bet on whose 1sts will be better I'd bet on Anaheim or LA before Calgary as well.
I'm on board landing Eichel but I feel Buffalo would much prefer taking deals from those teams. In the end maybe their ask is too high so Flames are one of the teams left by default but unless the Flames overpay I feel Buffalo would just wait it out until they got a return they liked. I suppose it depends on how adamant Eichel is about leaving but ultimately it isn't his call.
Have you seen NYR’s offer? I mean I keep seeing you post the narrative that Calgary can’t even touch what some of these other teams are presenting but Monahan + Dube + 1 of Zary/Pelletier + 1st is more than a competitive offer than what we’ve seen reportedly offered by NYR and Vegas. Not sure if LA or Anaheim have had reported offers out there yet but to say the Flames basically have no skin in the game because of what we can offer is way off base. The Flames have more than a fair offer to present and I hope they do so.
Also the argument that ANA and LA’s 1st next year will be higher than the flames is actually something that works into the Flames favour; LA and ANA still need to be committed to their current rebuilds and now is not the time to be spending young assets on a piece to push them over the top which is precisely where the Flames are at right now. Honestly from my perspective bias aside my opinion is the Flames are a perfect suitor and can offer a competitive package for Eichel more so than any other team rumoured to be in on the sweepstakes.
Here is a 3 way deal with Ottawa I think can work:
To Flames: Eichel
To Senators: Monahan
To Sabres: Dube, Valimaki, Flames 1st 22, Brannstrom, L.Brown, Sens 2nd 22
Sabres get 4 players and 2 draft picks for Eichel and all 4 are young players they can plug into their young roster right away. Sens get a top 6 center they are reportedly covering and the Flames get their guy
The rangers just have higher end futures they can offer. The draft picks are roughly the same range. The thing is, I don't think the rangers are offering their best young players.

All likely Olympic-caliber players. Outside shots at Rasmus, who I think could still take a big leap, Valimaki, even Kylington or Coleman could make those types of pushes. Tanev? Likely not but really only because of Canada’s depth of talent. He’d probably be considered for most other nations.
Two time Stanley cup winning coach with a more aggressive bottom 6.
If that team somehow sucks, I wouldn’t even know what to say. Defence could be a weak point, but I think a couple young guys make big steps in Gio’s place.

That's the rumour. The Pegulas have no interest dealing him in the east.
Why would they care, if they are selling the team?

That scenario works if Buffalo agrees to take Monahan. Would not be surprised if that was the sticking point.
We’d probably lose Mangiapane as well. Which would suck.
Mangiapane is not a prospect anymore. He's a top six NHLer who hasn't even entered his prime yet. There is zero chance he gets included "as a prospect" in any deal.
