I dunno, I could never get into this show, even though I really wanted to.
Seinfeld was one of my, if not my favorite show ever, but this always seemed to be a bunch of Seinfeld jokes just redone with a jerky camera and mockumentay feel. Even in that season eight trailer I see two Seinfeld rip offs, and two, basically jokes along the same lines.
Larry David is just a more unlikeable George, and as fans know, that's who George's character was based in the first place. But at least for George you rooted for him sometimes, he had a bit of the loveable loser syndrome. Larry is just completely unlikeable. I dunno why. Probably writers and producers shouldn't be actors.

Who rooted for George? The guy killed his fiancee then went out for coffee. Larry isn't any more unlikable than he is. Maybe you just don't like it because there isn't an ensemble like Seinfeld -- it's George all the time, every time. There's no scene of Curb that doesn't have Larry in it.
It's still brilliant, IMO.

Hey, never said there weren't reasons to like it. Just said I couldn't get into it.
George was my favorite character. I rooted for him sometimes. Although, along those lines, you think I'd like Larry. But I dunno, I just don't. He pisses me off.
The George-fiancee thing was so over the top you couldn't take it seriously. Didn't bother me. Maybe it's the mockumentary style, or maybe Larry just isn't a good actor, but I just can't get behind the character. The funny thing is I usually like that kinda style. I liked both versions of The Office.
I love Curb myself but sometimes I do imagine Larry as being George in all the episodes and it just seems funnier in my head as Larry just looks and sounds too nice and the fact that it's an act slips through while Jason Alexander could truely do the self-absorbed character perfectly.

I "liked" your statement and basically agree. However, I will say that I certainly DID root for George as I do for Larry. The fact that their self-centered personalities take place in a fictional setting, makes it "cool" and humorous and it is therefore easy to support them.
Yes, of course George is based on Larry and much of what happened in Seinfeld are from real life experiences, but remember Larry is playing a fictional version of himself. To me, they are basically the exact same character and both equally likable.
I think intentionally you're supposed to enjoy it when things go right for both characters and also enjoy it when things go wrong.

Its funny because - while I totally know what you mean - I usually side with Larry on a lot of those little tiffs he has. He's definitely in the wrong a whole hell of a lot, but for the most part I agree with him in his little arguments with ridiculously over-sensitive rich Cali types. I can't even believe some of the stuff people get mad at him about, I'd laugh in their faces.
As for the poor acting bit, I've heard that from a few people over the years. Which is why I point out to them that it probably seems this way because 80-90% of what you see is unscripted. They just know where they need to take each scene, and the rest they come up with on the fly.
I think where most people struggle starting out with this show is all the confrontation/arguing, it just straight up exhausts some people. It usually takes a few eps to get used to it, I struggled at first too. But now I could probably watch a full season in one day if I had the time, just love me some LD. Can't wait for season 8, its been too long.
