Did anyone live by a Red Rooster?
My cousin used to live by the one on 44th ave, in Whitehorn.

We used to go all the time for candy and stuff!!!! Such good times, I miss living in the North East.

Anyone else lived/lives in the Castleridge/Falconridge are?

The place I loved the most growing up as a kid was Bulwinkles!!!!!!!!
I lived in Falconridge for a short time in in '83...80's and Calgary..good times

Oddly enough - I just got an email with a bunch of this stuff!

Some new ones from the email:
- the Dinosaur Park opening up at the zoo, with the "scary" bridge!
- buying 1 cent candies at 7-11?
- Food City? Food for Less? Save on Foods?
- the '88 Olympics with mascots Heidi and Howdy
- Rollerland and Llyod's?
- when Ikea was that “weird European store”
- The theatre in Malborough Mall? Westbrook Mall?
- The TransCanada mall was actually a mall? Franklin?
- the A&W on 16th with the old fashioned window style service?
I spent at least 4 nights a week at Rollerland in the 80's.....brings back memories of Tiffany..Rick Ashley and flying over the low wall onto a table in 87..

Remember 2&7 "Scoop" - news for kids? I ended up becoming friends with the host of that - Cassandra - in university.

Oh and CBC's Switchback with Humble Howard? Man I wanted to be on that show....
I remember meeting him in 86 and him being a complete jerk...and they sure did play alot of Motley Crue "smokin in the boys room" EVERY show..

Things I remember from the 80's..

-Chucky Cheese..the ultimate for an 80's child..pizza..big scary rodents and the best friggin video games a 9 year old could stick a token into..the first place I played Congo Bongo and Donkey Kong..

-AM 106..80's music...pure cheese..but man..iwas it fun..

- The Zoo...this is where my fear of Crocodiles started..

-Rollerland...spent more time here then any other place in the 80's..and got hurt here more times then any other place

-Stampede Wrestling...so many great wrestlers started here..and it was only $6.00 a ticket..

-driving up the hill to Westgate and seeing the lights of the city below at night

-the excitment of going to Calaway park for the first time and realizing there was NO way I was going on that Rollercoaster!

so many things come to mind that I can't put em all..Buckshot..the fireworks during the Stampede..the Olympics..the midway during the Stampede..the mountainview in the morning..Toy's R us opening across the street from me when I lived in WhiteHorn..and lottsa others...

I feel very lucky to have grown up in this city..
is there anyway I can take all us all back there?

I loved going bowling there, and then watching those shows on stage, and eating pizza, and playing in the arcade. As a kid, I was in heaven. So much fun there.

Also to add to my previos post, I remember when Fish Creek Park and Anderson LRT Station were as far south as you can go in this city, now I would say 5-10% of the city is below that part.

There used to be an old Shell Gas Station in Castleridge where I used to live, and the guy that worked in the store inside had funky hair and his name was Fresh.

Any how I will always remember the guy bc he worked at that store for about 10 years, and I would always go to get slurpees there.

Back in the day for a $1.32 (Thats with GST), you got a 32 ounce slurpee and a bag of chips. :P

Also I remember when the Taco Bell opened up in the North East for the first time, it was such a big deal, because it was the first Taco Bell in Calgary, and I used to love eating there (Still do hehhhehehe)

Also, I remember a grocery store called Food City by Temple. I remember going there with my mom when it was closing down and they were liquidating all there stuff.

And then there was Food For Less by Whitehorn Station, now a Safeway. I will remember that place bc I met Gary Roberts, and Doug Gilmour there back in the early 90s, and they were giving a way mini hockey sticks and they signed one for me. But of course me being like 8 or something I played hockey with it and totally ruined it. I also met Mike Vernon there as well.
...the Foos for Less was directly across the street from where I grew up..I remember thinking it was odd to be renting movies from a grocery store

I saw Gremlins at the theatre that is now Studio 82 which was studio 82 theatre.

You guys (on the first page at least) are taking me on a trip down memory lane.

My mother lived in Acadia, my Dad in Bonavista. I went to Andrew Sibbald & Nickle. I saw Gramlins at Studio 82, I remember the trailer park where Kramer Mazda now sits.

I remember Mcleod Trail before Avenida mall existed. Before all the over passes, back when the only things along Mcloed between Southcenter & Midnapore were the grain elevators & Father Lacombe center...

I used to go dirtbiking where that massive shopping complex in Shawnessy now sits.

My uncle lived on Lake Twintree road. I used to bike over from Lake Lucerne Drive to visit him.

Whoever mentioned Bankers Hall... I used to work with a lady who was an accountant for the architect that designed Bankers Hall. It was supposed to be 3 (yes THREE) towers. Tehy built the first one in the early 80's, but then teh NEP decimated the Alberta economy, so the plans for the other two were put on hold... For 20 years. I don't know if there are plans to build the third tower, my source was 10 years removed from the architect when I got that info.
My father was a commercial realtor & constantly went downtown to look at buildings. I'd always tag along mostly because we'd always end up on the roof.
I literally watched CAlgary's downtown go from 30 buildings to hundreds.

I only got 3/4 down the first page before posting, so I must now go see how much of this has already been said.

Gadzooks! (This is like reading an Archie comic)

Consumers Distributing... In the plaza across from the Brick

Mr. Soft Drink... In Bonavista plaza

The Peanut Factory?... er... AGT building at Bonaventure & Acadia... Remember the island just south of there that differentiated the street with houses from the street for traffic. That island had a cool little bike path that me & friends would ride to Mr. Soft Drink

Bullwinkles... HaHa... I went there with a group of friends when I was 8 & accidentally fell off the bench. I was labelled 'whoopsie diapers' for 5 years...

Yankee Doodles... As per my previous post, my dad was a commercial guy, my uncle & him owned that building from when it was called Malibu Beach, thenm Yankee Doodles, then Crystal Palace...

Jeez... You puck.commers are tripping me out...

(and thats just the end of page 2)

Ooh... I have vague reccollection of Mothers pizza... Anyone remember Venus Pizza?

The confectionary in Acadia Plaza... I still remember the old chinese guy that ran that place. One day, I was waiting in line to buy some candy, & the old chinese guy was handling a customer that had a ripped in half 10 dollar bill. The customer was buying 2 X 5 dollars worth of lotto tickets & the chinese guy holds up each half of the $10 & proclaims "Five bucks, five bucks!!!"... (not to be confused with that lame Pizza Hut ad)

Willy's Hamburgers used to reside in that plaza.

My first job was a paper route that covered all the apartment buildings on heritage dr from the police station to Willy's. The lady at willys used to give me a hot choco every day.

Before they rebuilt the little shack on Blackfoot & Heritage (some kind of utility house), it resembled a 2 foot house with a pitched roof. I used to think that thats were Satan lived...

Cenetr Ice sports. I remember that being in the same plaza as Consumers & Romantika. I don't recall it being in Bonavista Plaza...

What a trip. I should visit this site more often.

It was on MacLeod Trail S somewhere...don't remember exactly where though.

Yeah. I think they still have one in Regina, maybe even in Edmonton. Going to Regina feels like going back into time sometimes. They also have "Bonanza" out there still.

Funny you guys mention that place. I went to Jack Astors (there) for the first time in a long time. I used like Fuddruckers because you go to make your own burgers...

I have been reading your posts, those places you mentioned are my old stomping grounds.

So can someone tell a young guy what was there before deerfoot? Did they just have a smaller road?

Was it an empty valley? did they have to tear a bunch of stuff down?
It was empty pristine valley. You could walk down there and see deer, bear and on occassion some moose. I loved going down there. Blackfoot Trail was the last main corridor on that sode of the city for a good long time. Hell, it used to end at Heritage drive for years and years. Then they extended it only to run into what would become the back nine of Mapleridge golf course.

Man, I used to remember going down to "the valley" with some beers, lighting a fire and having a really good time with the girls from school. We were always so scared the cops would catch us, which they never did. Good times. Man, I'm feeling old.

Memorial Drive used to follow the river in the valley until it got to Forest Lawn.
They had to build it up alot for the overpass.Eventually many years later they dug down some more for Deerfoot to fit under it. The zoo was partly up above it on
Tom Campbell Park for undulates, antelope and deer and others. But the road below the park remained there, used to have a Dog Food processing company and other industrial things there .Nothing really was torn down for Deerfoot on the north side.

I remember my bud taking us down there in his beautiful 39 Chevy, big long windows front and back, long hood ,short trunk, nice wheels ,emerald green, just a beaut.
327 ,3 speed for those interested.
Anyway we parked right under Memorial where Deerfoot is now, rolled up the windows and all four us ,lit up.
Little did we realize that somebody had pulled up beside us.duh!
We heard a rap on the window and when my friend rolled down his massive window there was quite a plume that blasted ,...,you guessed it ,a motorcycle cop.
Duck.
So the cop says geez I didn't want to bust you ,I just came to look at the car.
And we all jumped out of the car ,huge hair and all and opened the two-sided hood
and showed him everything. With a straight face! lol
