If he is willing to do that, their top 3 won't be that overpaid when the cap explodes.
Washington and Pittsburgh did not have high profile d when they won their cups. Letang and Carlsson aren't significantly better than Rielly and what they had after those 2 on d wasn't spectacular. They did have good goaltending, but the Leafs can find a goalie and improve the d with Nylander's contract.

Tavares has earned his money thus far, and he’s the captain. He’s already made over $100M, it wouldn’t be surprising if he did them a real solid, and took between $5-6M AAV. Or he could go full Bergeron and sign for like $2.5M, if he really wanted to maximize his chances.
The captain of the leafs team that ends that drought will more than make it up on the back end.

Exactly, Tavares is up when Marner is up. Next year might be tight too, but I think 25/26 the Leafs will still be young but a team in their prime with a much better cap situation.
Maybe Trevliving buys now, and it hurts they future but those moves will be what blocks them not this contract. They are set up to be good IMO with the right moves

The issues are going to be Marner's contract (he will ask for $11.5 at least) and the fact they will have top go and find goalies and Dmen if they want to compete because their homegrown ones suck/don't even exist. They've got Morgan Reilly signed long term and no goalies. They will need relatively inexpensive guys on D and in goal and they have no trade capital to get them (and UFAs will be overpriced).

Help, save, whatever.

Always nice to keep the players you draft and develop long-term. After Matthews and Marner's contract Nylander deserved to try and get as much money as he could. I think he would have gotten more on the open market, but probably not much more. Overall ok with this but Woll needs to continue his strong play after injury for this to work next season. Then the Leafs can save a lot of money in net. 24-25 is going to be the tight year, after that Tavares' contract comes off the books (he likely signs for a lot cheaper) and things will get easier.

Well, they don't have to do the exact trade the Flames did for Hamilton.
The point is Hamilton is a top unit dman and he went for the type of return. So it's not impossible to trade for a 22-year-old up and coming dman.

It's impossible if you have nothing to trade. The Leafs have but one first round pick (which will not be a 16th) and no second round picks in the next couple years. They have no decent prospects to trade that I can think of.

Looks that way right now, but evaluating prospects is not an exact science. The Flames have 2 players on there team, Zary was a around top 50 prospect and Pospisil was no where near any top prospect list. Both are player well. Leafs can find these types of players too and if they do they will improve their cap situation to target a dman.
Who was picking Vegas last year at the start of the year with their goalies? Then Logan Thompson goes down, who was picking them at that point? They started the playoffs with Brossoit, he did not play well. Who was picking them when they switched to Adin Hill? lol nobody was picking them and predicting them to get that kind of goaltending from Adin Hill.
Right now, the Leafs have holes that need to be fixed. This contract is not an anchor and is not blocking them from having a chance with some good moves to fill those holes. Marner, Matthews and Nylander are not a bad trio to build around at $35 to $36 mil per, especially when the cap will be $96+ before these guys turn 30.

The beauty about draft picks is you get a new set every year. Right now, they can't make that trade. But this is an 8-year deal and a core of 26–27 year-olds. This is not a team that is done in 2 years.
What Treliving does this year will have an impact on what this team can do in the future. He probably makes a bad move but he might just go with what he has this trade deadline. If he does, his draft situation improves, and the team is not old.

The core is 3 guys. Only one of whom is a centre.
They have 4 years of Matthews before he's gone baby gone, one year of Marner under contract, one of Tavares (he will re-sign but will be 35 also), and they have Reilly, who's 29 and not the star they think he is.

Matthews was a UFA this summer and signed a year early. Why is he gone in 4+ years?
Marner likely stays too.
Nylander and Reilly are locked up and Tavares yes will be 35, but he will not get $11 again and if he does, they could use his $11 elsewhere.
Treliving has work to do but they are a top 10 team right now with some serious holes on their roster. Someone must be contributing to them winning games right now. The top end is not the problem. As a Flames fan I would love to have their top 3 over ours. Most teams would

Are you sure you aren't a Leafs fan? You have made about 30 posts about them. This core isn't winning #### IMO
They can barely win an actual hockey game now

Matthews might score 50 in 50 this year - 26 years old
Marner and Nylander are PPG-floor/100+ in a good year - 26 and 27 years old.
Tavares has 388 points in 397 games as a Leaf - 33 years old.
MacKinnon and Rantanen hadn’t won anything until they were 26 either. Joe Sakic was 26 and would’ve been waiting longer had they not acquired Roy.
Steve Yzerman was 31 when Detroit won their first.
It even took Wayne Gretzky five years.
The Leafs have an imperfect roster. It has holes.
Is it easier to find Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Tavares, or some blue line depth and a goalie.
Because the Calgary Flames have the latter.
Patience - it’s a virtue.

Who said anything about the Flames
Blue line depth lol? no I am talking about an entire blue line, bottom six, and a goalie
all your stats are regular season offensive numbers, not sure you understand my critique...Matthews might score 50 in 50, and they have 12 regulation wins in 37 games
I guess we can wait for the Leafs deep playoff run with this core, I have serious doubts
SO and 3 on 3 dominance ain't gonna help in the spring
