I’ve read that prior to the rescue, the coach had begged for forgiveness from the families of the boys. They all forgiven him

To those still blaming the coach, here’s a good CNN article about the coach

https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/10/asia/...ntl/index.html

Quote:
Ekkapol Ake Chantawong, the 25-year-old coach of the Wild Boars soccer team, has been criticized by some for what is perceived to be an act of supreme recklessness.
Why did he, the adult tasked with taking care of 12 young children, decide to lead the group into a dangerous, forbidden network of underground tunnels, known to flood at this time of year?
To those who know the former monk and community worker, the willingness of others to judge from afar has led to a characterization they say is unfair and inaccurate.
Quote:
This selflessness, says Kantawong, is what helped to keep the children alive during those first nine agonizing days before divers discovered the missing group huddled together on a ledge, surrounded by floodwater, some 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) into the cave network.
"He loves the football team. Wherever he goes, he always has some of the kids with him," she says. "Their parents trust him that he can take of their sons."
Kantawong says that although Ake organizes and coaches several training sessions a week for the junior Wild Boars team, he receives only a small stipend. "He's not motivated by money," she says. "He does it because he loves soccer and working with children."
Kantawong rejects the idea that he would knowingly do anything that might harm the children. "He is very good person, loves kids, takes care of kids, he is very diligent, and always volunteers himself to help others," she says. "The language he speaks is very polite. For him whoever will like him how the way he is."

That was my thought too! The joke pretty much writes itself, but until everyone was safe, it was in way too poor of taste to say it!

I can't take credit - the original author didn't want to risk an infraction, but they know it was well done.

Faith in humanity restored! So happy to hear they all made it out alive. What an amazing story.

And how great is it to have a story like this at the top of our news feeds today. Such a nice change of pace from the avalanche of horrible bulls**t coming out of the U.S. on a daily basis.

I hope the movie doesn't take too long to come out especially now that it has a happy ending like Captain Phillips, 33 or Deep Water Horizon (kinda).

The one on the trapped miners in (Peru?) was pretty good. They were down there for frigging months and s lot of politics developed

Thanks for this. This is a good write-up for anyone curious about the coach.
I was sure he would be vilified after all of this, but it's pretty clear this situation would be a lot worse if he wasn't there.

Will be interesting to hear the stories once everyone is healthy, as he doesn't seem like the type to endanger 12 lives. Will be interesting to hear how they got there, and when this changed from a fun outing to a survival mission.

Me too. During the rescue, it was mentioned a few times how dangerous this journey was. I'd love to see a re-enactment of how these heroes got 13 malnourished bodies through tight caverns and over steep climbs. It must have been absolutely brutal.

The physical exhaustion would have exacerbated the mental fatigue as well.

I imagine the risk of panic was a variable to have been managed.

Apollo 13 has some parallels including the happy conclusion.

They at least considered medicating the kids against panic. Haven't read if they actually did that with anyone but wouldn't surprise me.

If The Tunnel was any indication, other countries produce great movies and I'd much rather hear someone like that produce a movie on this.

Either way it'll be entertaining, but I keep thinking of The Tunnel whenever I get excited about hearing these stories.

Side note: Watch The Tunnel if you haven't yet.

ehh, if I had to pick a country to make a movie on something, it's definitely the US, they really just do have the best production quality.

In seriousness though, not everything needs a movie. This is a great story, but it would be a boring movie.

Instead of Scuba'ing them out, they'd speed them out on a crotch rocket! Right under a horse parked in one of the air pockets!

127 hours turned out alright

if a movie was made with a lesser story about just one guy getting stuck, you'll know they'll make one for this
