It is generous, but I believe that was in response to the high uptake on the package in the first couple of days. They changed their message from "if you stay, you might still lose your job and not get a good package" to "You should stay. We'll give you the same package if you still get laid off later".

Wonder how all of this will change the workplace dynamics at each of Shaw’s locations as I would assume that a lot of disgruntled workers took the package.

Pretty sure the remaining employees are going to get gruntled pretty quickly doing 33% more work now.

Generous? Sure. But this was because the current 51% taking the offer was much higher. This statement, I believe valid for 3 years, was made to stop the flood which was pushing 75% "show me the money!"

Where are you going to go? How is Calgary going to absorb the job losses? And yet Shaw employees are taking the chance. The chance that you will be up against every other soon-to-be-ex-Shaw employee, looking for work. As someone else mentioned, that is telling about the culture and morale at Shaw.

I think low morale is part of the deal in Calgary right now, ers. Shaw isn't unique in that respect. People are taking the offer because it is a fata ton of free money. Get paid to not work? Yes please.

They are spreading it out over 18 months.. so that's on average 42 a week.. spread across how many different industries? At the end of 2017 the # of employed people increased in Alberta by 26,000, I don't know how many of that was in Calgary. And 26,000 is all kinds of jobs, Shaw people are only going to be certain kinds of jobs. But that's still a pretty big number compared to 160 a month.

Just trying to actually figure out if that many people coming onto the market is actually a significant number, or if it'll be insignificant to the regular thrashing of people quitting and looking for jobs.

perhaps I missed this, but are the majority of these job losses in Calgary?

also, perhaps shaw hires back to fill some positions? especially if they were only expecting 10% uptake
