Not quite. 6 goals since the 20th. Just because Brouwer is on the ice with Stajan it doesn't count twice.

No, 6 goals against. Top 8 in the league since then. Higher ranking %-wise I think, but I could be wrong about that.

Maybe its the norm across the league, but it does make me wonder how the special teams experience such crazy swings in effectiveness.
The PK was abysmal early in the season, now its pretty damn good.
The PP was pretty good early this season and in the latter half of last season. Now its gawd aweful.
Why the inconsistencies? Confidence? Just Hot/Cold?
There are teams out there known for their consistently dangerous powerplay and stingey PK. What are the Flames known for? The bump back?

I am re-watching the game right now...Flames played an incredibly good game.
You would never know it from the comments earlier in the GT.

Well, if you believe that Brouwer was brought in for that role then... It's one thing making a mistake on a player. But do you actually think Treliving will sign another veteran at 4-4.5M to play on the 4th line?
You must really hate the current management team to think this way.

Thing I don't get about Brouwer is that his speed isn't all that bad really. He seems to show flashes of caring. So what is it? Just his head's not in it?
I'd like to see more from him in terms of tenacity, assertiveness, physicality and blocking shots / getting in lanes. He seems like one of those guys that once he got the big contract, called it a day and doesn't want to put the same work in anymore or put his body at risk.
If he's getting big minutes on the PK, he needs to be more like Stephane Yelle. Block shots and put your body at risk more. The fans will respect you a whole hell of a lot more that's for sure. It's how Bouma became popular before he got paid and decided it wasn't worth it anymore either.

You've got 7 forwards on the main two PP groups - Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, Jankowski, Backlund, Ferland and Bennett right now. When Jagr comes back he usually replaces one of those guys (Typically its been Bennett, might be Ferland now).
That leaves 5 guys who don't - Frolik, Brouwer, Stajan, Hathaway, Lazar (or whoever Jagr replaces above when comes back).
Hathaway should replace one of Stajan or Brouwer (Brouwer is fine at faceoffs so shouldn't matter which one).

Regarding the PK, I remember mentioning this in another thread some time ago, but essentially you have a few games that are really dragging down the %. That Detroit game alone accounts for 4 of the 26 PPA. 14 ppga were as a result of 6 earlier in the season. Since the Detroit game they are running at an 86% clip.

What was really good about the game was our defenseman. Great in their own zone, loved it.

Yep. Those are the teams that you aren't watching game by game. Even at this time of the season, one or two PPG for or against can make a noticeable bump in the percentages. From game to game and week to week, there's no such thing as consistency.

No points given up by the Flames in the last two games. Hope trend continues.

Read that 11 games straight the Flames have outshot their opponent.

This is not entirely true. Yes, over eleven games the Flames have been absolutely dominant in shot-generation. However, Montreal equaled their 37-shots. So, while they have outshot their opponents in 10/11 games, the one outlier is a game in which the other team was no better than even with the Flames.

I don't think it's generally reasonable to exclude games or sets of game when the penalty kill is poor to explain away a lousy overall percentage. But I take your point that they seem to have woken up since the Detroit game and the PK has been really good for an extended period of time now. Surprised me actually. Because when you see how slow Brouwer is out there, it just seems like we're vulnerable all the time. I'd love to see more of Hathaway in a PK role. Seems perfect for him.

With what looks to be an emerging Janko/Bennett pairing up front, the top 9 look set for the future providing Backlund can be re-signed.
For the near term however, it would sure be nice to have the top line break out of their current funk.
|
Same here. I don't think you need to buy out Brouwer though.
Only having Brouwer isn't the problem right now, he is overpaid, and not what we wanted, but as a 4th line veteran he hasn't been that bad this year. The problem is having all four of Stajan, Jagr, Versteeg, and Brouwer on this roster at the same time.
So next year with just Brouwer it's not that bad - he can be the veteran anchor on a younger fourth line and play PK. Plus be extra insurance because RW depth still isn't great in our system.
Of course if a top line RW upgrade is available the Flames look at it and that would push Brouwer right out the line up but if not the following forward lineup wouldn't be the worst:
Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Bennett - Janko - Hathaway
Mangiapane - Hrivik - Brouwer
Klimchuk/Poirier

Dude the flames spent almost the entire game grinding the blues in their own zone and the entire gt was filled with “this game sucks/is boring”
Not sure what people want to see, I was really really pleased with the effort(on most nights recently) and seem to be on an island

I would love Lazar start getting some reps on the PK. He is fast and gritty, and he was known for being good defensively. Wasn't Ottawa using him on the PK?
Lazar's offence hasn't been coming around (though he might end up being a good depth scorer). If he is going to find a permanent place on this team and actually contribute, it is going to start being on the PK. He is tenacious enough and has a non-stop motor - I would start getting him exposed to the PK. Him and Hathaway would be two guys I would like to start seeing there more.
I feel if a team isn't running enforcers on the 4th line (which they don't), then those 4th line guys have to be the guys on your PK, as well as provide energy and depth scoring.
I notice Brouwer actually making a number of solid plays defensively, and I can see why he is out there. However, he is also prone to stuff like last night. I would want Lazar to get some reps in - not PK1, but maybe PK 2 or even PK3.

No one else has more than 2 minutes on the PK.
Pretty clear which pair is the weak link.

The PK has only improved since they started using more Janko and Bennett. I am not sure Janko will ever be a game breaker but hi is pretty good at playing mistake free hockey.

Since they have focused on zone enteries the PK has really improved.
