So the Flames have the worst powerplay, worst penalty kill, and worst goal differential in the league, but got themselves into a playoff spot tonight. It's like they looked at all the advanced stat criticism they got last year and decided to do one better this year by ignoring the real stats too

Flames just need to keep playing solid...sure they will lose one eventually but if they play like they did tonight more often than not they should have no trouble being a playoff team...home ice should be the goal

I think having Johnny on the point would be a waste, to be honest. He needs to be on the wing to be able to pass it to the front of the net or back to the point and keep the PK'ers honest.

When the PP is struggling like it is sometimes you just need to keep it simple. Someone in front of the net, keep the d-men on their wrong side to be able to one-time it, and try to get some ugly goals.

I would try Ferland in front of the net to create and screen and traffic in front of the goalie.

they are the best 5 on 5 and 3 on 3 team though

and goal differential has everything to do with being blown out every game in the first month

3-on-3, absolutely. They're better 5-on-5, but not the best. They're tied for fourth in 5-on-5 scoring, but only Edmonton has allowed more goals against at 5-on-5.

The Flames still have a -10 goal differential at 5-on-5, which is 25th overall. The Rangers have a +21 5-on-5 differential.

Goals Against: Tied for 30th
Goals For/per game: 13th
Goals Against/per game: 30th
PP %: 30th (10.8% - last by quite a bit)
PK%: 30th (72.6% - last by a lot)

When you see stats like that it's pretty crazy. Either they will continue the trend and be near the bottom of the standings at the end of the year, or they will improve and make the playoffs again. Not much in between imo.

Tonight the PK was perfect and Ramo played great, so hopefully things are starting to swing the other way. The PP continues to be a huge issue.

yeah I meant in recent games but didn't really clarify

they are dominant 5 on 5 of late

3-0 tonight against the top team

Alrighty then. Like I said, I only caught that quick glimpse from the NHL.com highlights. From that angle, it looked like he has his back to Benn the whole time (+ it seemed like he came crashing in at a decent pace ie. charging). Either way, glad he's alright.

Also, love Ferland's game and how effective it can be. Must be hard to always play right on the edge but I think he does it right.

All those terrible stats though, this season really has been a tale of two teams.

The first version was unbelievably terrible, and IMO skewed the overall numbers.

The one we've seen for the last 15 games or so has been much better from head to toe, but it will take a lot longer than 15 games to erase the despicable stats they put up until that point.

Exactly. The start of the season we had multiple issues that lead to the blow outs and bad stats. Horrible goaltending, defence wasn't clicking with injuries and new players, and then the offence was also really struggling early. A team can fight through one of those issues at once, all of them at once and your doomed. I think the Flames we have been seeing the last 15 or so games are the real flames. If we start winning our 7 game segments from here on we will be in the dance.

The one thing that worries me is that Power Play. Something has to give, try and new system, new players, fire Gelinas, do what it take IMO

Flames had 9 shots on their last power play. Thinking it might be coming around. Let's see what happens next game.

Their last power play in the game was very good, I thought, and the Flames were unlucky not to have scored.

I get the feeling like this is something that will just eventually work itself out. Special teams are an odd thing, because there is often no real consistency from one year to the next and one team to the next. Last year the Flyers possessed a top-five power play, and this year it is among the worst.

Not to cherry pick but I wonder what those stats would look like if you removed October? It really has been a tale of two teams this season.

Other than the shorthanded goal, I thought the powerplay tonight at least looked like there were NHL players on the ice. No goals to be had but there were some legit chances and a decent amount of shots. Still a ton of improvement needed but they might be on the upswing if you want to mark that 5 on 3 in Nashville the absolute low point of the season for the powerplay.

Not sure if its been mentioned, but Ramo at .907 now on the season. Hes probably around .920 since being sent down/recalled.
