by some people's logic, we could have paid DE 5 million per year, and that would not be considered a "bad contract" because we have cap space?
Meanwhile, people talk about the Byron deal being shrewd because we saved some money in not giving him a qualifying offer? Why? If you are under the cap floor, then people could have paid Byron whatever was awarded in arbitration, rather than risking a valuable asset (other people's assessment), walk away for nothing?
If Edmonton made this signing, I am pretty sure folks here wouldn't be justifying it with the same vigor and passion

There is a difference between 'bad' and 'worst'.
I have not seen a single person argue that he isn't overpaid - even Treliving acknowledged that.
<note: here's where logic comes in to play...>
Even though he is overpaid, it is NOT the worst contract, simply because it will never be a harm or burden to the Flames.
Any contract that causes cap issues, results in other players not being signed or having to be traded, or becomes a buy-out, would by definition be a worse contract than this one.
No one said it wasn't overpayment, just that it isn't that big of a deal.
Capiche?

Who should they have signed insetad, Oil Stain? Who was willing to come to Calgary that we passed on? What other insider info do you have from NHL players/agents and GM's?
Also, why didn't the Oilers get better UFA's? Why Mark Fayne and Benoit Pouliot? Now the Oilers will just have to get better UFA's next summer. Oh wait, because it's tough to get players to sign on a rebuilding team that finished near the bottom of the standings.
Also, your comments about Giordano show a lack of understanding of the team's commitment to him as a player and captain of the team, along with how the rebuild is coming along. Giordano's not going be extremely happy with his situation and the direction of the team like he is now, and be proud to be captaining this team in the future and then go "Oh wait, you guys overpaid for our 5/6th defenseman? I'm out!".
You always display such little knowledge when it comes to the Flames, but yet you're always there with some backhanded remarks about our organization. You also never respond when you're called out on it, you instead just wait for it blow over then you come back and lay down more incorrect, inaccurate things about the Flames.
I know you won't respond to this, but just know that those posts that you always ignore that call you out are visible to everyone else. Everyone knows your shtick on CP.

The hardcore analytics crowd had these two pegged as the best free agents available on July 1.
If only someone had sent an extraskater.com link to Treliving in time...

That is a terrible argument. The FA market wasn't great to begin with and Giordano is not going to go elsewhere because the Flames didn't overpay for Orpik or Niskanen. Besides, the Oilers signing Ference (3.25 cap hit for 4 years) last year and Pouliot this year are pretty terrible as well and they were actually thinking those signings were going to push them into the playoffs. Engelland's contract doesn't look like a good value contract but it's far from a death knell and doesn't handicap the Flames significantly at all going forward. By the time the third year comes around, the Flames will be turning the corner and his contract will be coming off the books. Engelland at half his value would have been great but the market drove his value up. I'm fine with that given the current situation.

Maybe he won't respond because posters like yourself come across so aggressive that its not worth it to respond and get into a bickering match. I know personally I will just lay my post out and usually never go back to read what others have said afterwards when it come to anything Flames or Oilers related.

That posting style is kind of odd to me. So you guys go onto a message board for "discussion", but you just lay out the post and don't go back to see what the responses were?
If that was me I'd probably just stop posting on CP. What's the point of posting if you're not going to acknowledge or even check what was said? Kind of defeats the point of a message board, no?
I get that I'm pretty harsh, and others as well. But I think it's deserved. I have all the time in the world for opposing fans who take the time to be involved in discussion and answer to criticism of their points. I also try to keep in perspective that bias is a normal thing, and something almost all of us Flames fans have as well. That's one thing CP'ers could be better about is not jumping down other teams fans throats for minor biases, as we all have them.
What I've got no time for is posters who show a considerable lack of understanding on a topic but also state their opinion in a matter of fact manner. Along with that, my biggest pet peeve in the world is posters who make controversial/incorrect/unthruthful comments and then don't respond to criticism.
Oilstain does both of those things. If a poster isn't here for discussion, and instead just wants to lay out points like they're ghandi and everyone should just take their opinion as gospel, then that's just ridiculous.
