I just can't get on board with that mentality.
It would be easier for these guys to announce nothing and have spokespeople address the press - Bosh is trying to satiate his fans, not his ego.
I'm not shocked or apalled by the fans' reactions to this free agency period, and I certainly don't fault the athletes for it.

The sign and trade option is just as important to Bosh as it's an extra 30 million bucks.
Colangelo is screwed either way now, so I'd have no problem if he did it, or if he didn't do it. If he does it, great we get some assets. If he doesn't, Bosh reaps the reward for his role in this circus.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say Lebron is signing with NY - i can't see why you would have an hour long press conference unless it's to move to the biggest media center in NA.
If he ends up with Miami - I will finally utter the words I never thought I would say in my lifetime - Go Boston

Lebron is going to one of 3 places imo
Miami- Just signed Bosh and re-signed Wade. It will be tough to squeeze them all in but if they really want it they can make it work
Cleveland- Hometown pride, desire to bring a title to the Cavs
Chicago- Just signed Boozer to add to Rose, Deng, Noah. Good core and the cap space to sign him to a max deal.

Vinny, I can almost agree with you... except Cleveland is out IMO.
Replace NYK with CLE. The Nicks went out and grabbed Stoudemire, who is sick when someone is passing him the ball. New York on it's own should be enough to attract tallent, but I think NY + LBJ, and people will be knocking over their grandma to play in the mecca. If they don't build the team this year, they'll have it next year.
James couldn't win the big game in Cleveland, and is looking for a change. They brought in a lot of tallent, but couldn't get it done.
Miami and Chicago have the pieces right now, that the only thing missing is LBJ. I just don't think Cleveland is as sexy to him right now.

Not to mention it's a lot easier to attract players to play in NYC and Madison Square then it is to Cleveland. So far they've done nothing to better there team this offseason. I'm positive it's going to be New York

What do the NBA fans here think of Lebron's announcement being turned into a television event?
I'm a huge basketball fan,but I hate the NBA game and consequently the NBA. From my perspective it's just another reason to hate the NBA as it, just like the NBA game itself, puts the singular player above all.
Thoughts?

I don't have a problem with it as the sponsorship money is going to the Boys and Girls Club.

That is awesome, and I wouldn't expect less of Lebron. The guy is a gem of a person by all accounts.

I'm actually shocked that word hasn't gotten out yet of where he is going given the free flow of information now a days.
You have to wonder if the organizations themselves know what Lebron is going to announce or if he is actually going to be rendering his decision to them on air as well.

See that's cool, but I can't help but think given the side show NBA free agency has become this off season that all this is doing is fueling the guy's ego further.
I mean has anyone else ever had an hour long special (likely complete with his own highlight package) to announce which team he is going to sign with?

It is all an ego boost, and these guys are such a bunch of self-indulging pansies. On the Lebron front, apparently he's going to call his team 5 minutes before the pressconference/brownnosing parade, to let them know he's going to sign with them. Argh....
As for Bosh leaving, after all is said and done, I don't really care. I like Colangelo playing hardball, and it may not seem like Bosh cares now that he's announced he's going to Miami, but you can guarantee he wants that extra $30M. His selfishness is causing this whole rigmarole, and I for one really don't care, out of spite, if they get a red cent for him. If they do decide to work something out, they have to get 2 1st rounders (ours and theirs). Beasley is useless (once again I've said it). I wouldn't mind Joel Anthony, but he's one of those guys like Anthony Parker, who really are marginal "starters", so I really don't care. Haslem I'd be interested in if they didn't already have a few PF's. Miami's team is dry pickings.

This isn't Mats Sundin or Brett Favre having a special after publicly dragging out their moves. LeBron re-signed following his rookie deal and is approaching the first day of free agency. He hasn't fed the media, he hasn't been hyping this up. People care this much - -he's just cutting out the middle man.
I think it's great. CP collectively spent a million hours following the draft, TSN has a twelve-hour special dedicated to one day of free agency - we live in an age of over-exposure.
Several teams have purged their roster of veteran players at the expense of talent and draft picks. Miami, New York, and Chicago have spent the better part of two seasons exclusively building toward this signing. Those fans have been sold on burning assets to invest in him.
He is bigger than the Cavaliers, he is bigger than the Knicks. It's already true.
My pick: Cleveland

In other news the guy who will be the best player in the NBA maybe even as soon as next year signed a 5 yr extension. Kevin Durant, being a one and done Longhorn, is my favorite player in the NBA. The kid doesn't care about glitz and glamour, hell he was even in Orlando this week to cheer on his summer league teammates. The guy lives and breathes basketball.

OKC has really embraced that team too. I was at Ford Center a couple of weeks ago for a concert. Was impressed with that arena.
Durant was an unbelievable college player. As a Jayhawk fan, I was glad he went to the NBA so quickly.
