Yes, the song is about the deaths of Buddy Holly et. al. in a plane crash. I always thought that one line was about Vladimir Lenin, though, not John Lennon. Who knows...I guess Don MacLean could have been making a clever pun, and the disambiguation was intentional.

They (him, Bib Bopper and Richie Valenz) died february 3 1959, and Buddy had recently married. One paper had the headline "The day that music died" the next day.

The song allegedly references many musical artists (our English 30 teacher made us analyze this song, thinking it was great poetry):

I know nothing about metal, so that genre will be notably absent from this list. Apologies to all the metalheads out there.
Killing In The Name - Rage Against The Machine
The Way I Am - Eminem
You Oughta Know - Alanis Morrisette
Untouchable Face - Ani DiFranco
Burn - Nine Inch Nails
Top 5 "pre-existing movie soundtrack songs" (top 5 songs that were given new life or gained newfound popularity because they were featured in a movie, excluding songs that were recorded specifically for a movie...hopefully that makes sense, and isn't too obscure).
As an example, I will offer "Stuck In The Middle" by Stealers Wheel from Reservoir Dogs

Keep in mind when the song was written there had only really been two decades of rock, the 50's and 60's, and they were very different.
There are a lot of sly references to 60's rockers ("Lenin read a book on Marx" is clearly a pun... obviously V.I. Lenin historically followed the teachings of Marx, but John Lennon's peace activism was also very antiestablishment and progressive; "Helter Skelter in a summer swelter" seems to recall Charles Manson's adoption of the Beatles song during his terror in LA; "and the birds flew of from a fallout shelter, eight miles high and falling fast" obviously refers to the Byrds, who sang 'Eight Miles High', a very psychedelic (read: drug-induced) song; "I met a girl who sang the blues" = Janis Joplin?). Et cetera...
Who knows, but it is a fun song and one of my favourites.

For Helicopters, there is also Ghetto Bird by family movie actor Ice Cube.
For songs about the Beatles, I'll mention No Beatles Reunion by Forgotten Rebels. Also, All Those Years Ago by George Harrison is definitely about the Beatles (or at least John).

Awesome choices. Was interested to see what somebody would come up with, and those are all great picks. And not only that, but you summarized what I sloppily attempted to say in a meandering paragraph in 6 words. Props.
