I don't disagree with you at all. I don't know what it is, but Asians have always had a desire for designer goods. I don't know if it's a culture thing, which it very well could be. Most cowboys wear Wranglers/Levi's, lots of black people wear Ecko/Timberland, lots of Asian prefer Gucci or D&G. Everyone is different. Doesn't mean one person is better than the other.

But.. I would never endorse anyone living beyond your means. We can't wait to have a kid to spend money on!

Well ok maybe stubborness is the best way to put it. That explains why Im so obsessed about it, and not wanting to give it up.

I would be careful to generalize about any large group of people, it's stereotyping whether it is positive or negative

ie: not all the Asians in THIS thread that are pretentious show offs, it's Asians in general
and
Asians have always had a desire for designer goods

That is correct for the most part. I dont know why Ive always craved the high end goods in life. Not a good way of living life, when you arent making huge dough every month.

I wish someone was here to literally force me to get rid of this phone. Im getting quite stressed out over this. I dont want to sell it because I love it, but I know I have to if I want to be on the path to lesser spending. Besides I know its not worth what I paid. Its called sacrificing in life, and Ive done it many times...why is it so hard on this?

My family dont even know what I paid for it, if they found out...well....lol....no comment.

Come find me and I'll throw it in the river for you. Or better yet, I'll sell it for you and take a 30% cut. . .

You don't represent ALL ASIANS IN THE WORLD, so please don't make sweeping generalizations like that.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with liking high end material items, and don't be ashamed! If it's going to kill you that much to get rid of the phone, then I say keep it. Don't sell it, don't feel guilty about it, just look at it like your last crazy spending spree. Start saving some money from now on. Set up a budget you can live with and only purchase big items like that once every six months or something. But don't sell the phone, it sounds like you are quite attached.

My wife and I have had a few discussions on if we want to pay for our (future) children's tuition. We've come to the conclusion that we'll pay for the tuition, but we'll probably insist that they live somewhere else while in school. Being away from home taught us a lot about budgeting. It might teach you a lot about budgeting to move out as well, though there does seem to be more issues than "I'm moving out, bye".

Get rid of the cell phone. I can't believe no-one's brought up your $1400 month with it. How do you even manage that? It makes no sense at all.

Well, hard to say...but obviously by buying it again after selling the first one I had, was a sign of something.

Hang on... You bought this phone once, sold it, and then bought it again?

Yes

I had the first one about 6 weeks ago, paid $650, felt the same way that I do now...it was too much so I mentally forced myself to get rid of it. Thankfully, I got a good offer without losing much, if any at all. Once I got rid of it, and went to a $200 phone I regretted it, and it was on my mind like glue. So I felt I had to get it again, so I bought another new one for a bit more about 3 weeks ago. I know Im pathetic doing that.

I'm really really curious about how you spent that much money on cell phone bills ... not to be judgmental or anything, I just honestly have no idea how it happens.

Have you considered speaking to a counsellor about this? It might be helpful to talk to a professional about this because I don't think you're being stupid or selfish, or that you "need to get some priorities straight in your life", but I do think this is addict behavior.

Thanks, but not being selfish when I feel that "I have to own a $1200 phone?" LOL

Cell phones bills - long distance. Had a guy friend too who I co-signed for, (stupid me) and he took off and ran up the bill.

I don't understand how that's selfish ... I may think its silly but from how you're describing it, it sounds more like consumption for the sake of consumption ... which seems to be more of a psychological issue than a personality flaw.

I suppose maybe you like the idea of having the expensive phone ... then again, I'm no Dr. Phil.

Well, I know this sounds reeeeeeal bad and ignorant but I cant get rid of this phone, I love it too much. It makes me happy but sad in a way of getting rid of it. Had I not loved it so much, I wouldnt have bought it again after selling the first one lol.

Maybe it is something that I should just keep. I will just continue on and not mention to anyone what I paid for it. But like really, when I refuse to give up a $1200 phone, how pathetic is that. Im so ashamed of myself.

I would still like to do, whats best and dump it, because I know I will feel happier when I get that all cash back in hand.

But boy am I ever materialistic or what.
