Just a goalie? There's arguably no position that can change your team's fortunes more and keep you competitive for the long haul than an elite goalie that you draft yourself and keep for a decade+.
|
That’s the thing/problem. There’s a large group here that whole heartedly believes that we will never win anything until we draft top 3 for 4 or 5 years in a row. However, their solution is a cowardly one, “the Tank”.
If they truly believed their strategy, you’d think they’d want to ensure success, leave nothing to chance and employ “the multi year forfeit”.

Yeah, a team isn’t going to go far when it’s top forward is like 80th in scoring

You have your goalie now. I think the tank route is gone unless you want to destroy or trade him.

Corey Perry would be sitting 4th in goals on the flames. He doesn’t play on the power play, and plays 11 and a half minutes a game. Huberdeau plays nearly 20 minutes a game, has a third of his goals and points on the power play. All that, and this is supposed to be some kind of turnaround season for him while he is “playing the best hockey of his life”. I’ll take the 1 million contract of Perry’s over the 10.5 Huberdaeu has.

Last night was a points killer that will come back to haunt them.
There are definitely players who need to show they needed a break when they come back, because they've wilted or been exposed the last couple weeks as expectations ramped up and it doesnt look like they can handle it.
But the GAS level remains with the guys truly driving this team, JH, Kadri. Wolf. Weegar and Andersson are trying but maybe too hard sometimes because they seem flustered at times, certainly this past week after Bahl.
Weeger leads the lead in turnovers.
Coleman wears his heart on a sleeve and I've never had concerns about him, he's always there.
Frost looks like he's going to be excellent in a role here, Farabee is fine too considering they've just been thrown into the fire.
Everyone else needs a reality check on this break as to if they can handle what's required in the last 30 or so games to make a difference.

I’m a tier 2 fan of the oilers, not KLowe. Ftr Lowe was imo the worst GM maybe in all of sports history, certainly in his time. Oilers fans, for most part, agree with me on this.

Who cares about the Oilers. They should have at least 3 rings right now if they had any sort of competence whatsoever.
When you tank 10 years in a row and get a generational player and 9 other #1 picks and still don't have a Cup, that is just sad.

Maybe so, but that’s in the past.
You ask who cares? Well I don’t hardly see a flames thread without some mention of the oilers, including this one multiple times. In fact, I would go as far as saying there is Oiler derangement syndrome in here, and it’s not a mild case.

Oilers/flames dynamic aside.
I think the flames have a goalie and when healthy good enough defense to win games. With the current roster they aren’t going to be weak enough to draft in the top 5.
I don’t see them gutting the roster and going the tank route. By the time that potentially pays off you are 5 years down the road. Wolf might be gone.
Conroy is committing to the 22-24 years old demographic and hasn’t been deviating. Pretty sure his plan is to keep following that path for another season or two and at some point use cap space to sign a higher end free agent or two.
It doesn’t look to me like they are gutting the team. Not after giving wolf #1 minutes and bringing in guys like Frost, farabee, bahl, pachal ect.

Oilers have peaked
Both in this year and in their window
The Flames have a future

I don’t hate the flames.. they’re a hockey team that’s a rival to my favorite team, the oilers… the biggest rival. I enjoy watching the flames lose, and then hear the whining about the refs and such, because yeah, that’s part of it all, as a fan, imo. But some here, not near all, take it to a different level of hatred.
And I by no means say, there isn’t flame derangement syndrome on the other end. Of course there is.

I realize you were commenting on a random poke at Perry and that's fine
but worth clarifying I suppose that Perry would be presently tied for 5th in goals on the Flames and is 5th in goals on the Oilers-
the Flames biggest problem (and its MASSIVE and the hardest to fix) is they don't have a 40G guy at the top of their leaderboard like the Oilers do, after that the lists strangely looks pretty similar

You could tank 50 times and not land a #1 goalie.

At the end of the day , every good team has a good goalie and a superstar/gamebreaker to carry them
The Flames have a good goalie but their supposed to be best player ranks at the bottom of the league for best player
Not surprising, that the team is floundering in the middle of no where

Fair comment. I don’t agree with it, and only time will tell, but it’s possible. I could equally say the flames are just beginning this rebuild they should have started years ago, but no GM has had the guts to do it, and likely Conroy won’t either, leaving you competitive for the next 10 years but no real chance at the cup. And if being competitive is what matters most, you have no real argument about the oilers moves and team, because they are at the very least, competitive.

Good point. I guess he’s tied for 4th in goals and because Coleman has more assists he would be 4th. Also I don’t defend the oilers lack of scoring in the middle part of the lineup other than to say, it’s pretty hard to get a run going when the top guys are getting the majority of the ice time. That said, I think if you’re the Oiler coach, you have to run the top guns like they do. Bit of a conundrum I suppose.

Oilers have wasted multiple first round picks and a generational talent and are on the cusp of returning to the dominance of the mid 90’s
Yet you are here pumping the tires of Perry
Incredible
