It's funny.

Sometimes teams don't even get the peak years of a player's skillset because teams are waiting for them to "repeat that" in the minors. By the time they finally break through as NHLers, injuries and wear and tear add up and the players have a short prime.

So you end up with underperforming veterans.

It is probable that Jacob Markstrom at age 25 as an AHLer was a better puck stopper than Jacob Markstrom at age 32, but which one gets the big dollars and icetime for the next three years after this one? The version likely entering a decline, being paid for past performance. It was probably the same with Kipprusoff.

Teams should be in the business of maximizing players' performance for their NHL club. And burying kids entering their prime in the minors while playing Trevor Lewis types in their top nine is probably not how you go about it. All young players need time as rookies... even Mangiapane had his struggles for months as a rookie after MORE ahl experience than Pellettier... but ultimately the only way to get a player to contribute positively to your NHL team is to have them learn to play in the NHL.

It's not about repeating it in the AHL. It's about getting a fair chance to take the next step so that we can capitalize on his prime.

Those guys got plenty of chances in the preseason and didn't earn a spot...now they have been average in the AHL while the Flames bottom six has been good in the NHL.

Gotta earn it

Team definitely looking like ass right now, but should be temporary. Sutter needs to go back to the lines at the start of the year. The initial top line should figure it out since there's too much talent on it.

Could perhaps use a AHL forward callup to see if it'll bring energetic spark.

This morning I feel like this adversity is a good thing. You know Sutter doesn't mind it and isn't freaking out like many of us. The cup winning Kings teams were never regular season darlings. They didn't care what seed they were as long as they made the playoffs. I'm going to be patient and see where this goes. Hopefully the games aren't as much as a slog as last night though.

I simply don't agree with that at all. Not a single prospect got playing time with the top nine forwards on this team during the preseason outside of maybe Dube. You have to put these players in positions to succeed. I point to LA finally having the awareness to play Vilardi big minutes in the preseason alongside players who actually compliment his skillset and look at what he has done with that opportunity. Ruzicka's production since turning pro is extremely similar to his - yet he couldn't dream of sniffing an opportunity in the top six/nine here. Zary and Pelletier got two games with plug linemates and they were gone. That's a surefire way to kill a kids confidence after a summer of hard work, and I think it's trickled into their starts this season. Sutter is overly reliant on those he is comfortable with and it's one of his only faults.

For a roster that is as old and experienced as the one we are icing we are sure seeing a lot of braindead mistakes. These mistakes would have first or second year guys stapled to the bench. We saw it with Ruzicka who was benched after a poor defensive read in his first game of the season.

Our forward group is dull and lacks creativity and energy.

So long as you enter November .500 you have a shot at the playoffs.

They've beat each of the top two teams in the pacific.

There are good omens abound, but losing in bunches is a killer.

Would he be replacing Lindholm, Backlund or Kadri? That's why he can't sniff the top nine here. The centre position is finally good.

Again - LA moved Vilardi to the wing in order to properly slot his skillset within the lineup. It's not a difficult thing to do. Calgary literally gave Ruzicka one period of the preseason on the wing after talking openly about wanting to see how he could transition to the position.

This is something I keep thinking about.
That this team may not (likely won't) have the year in the standings that they had last year, but maybe (hopefully) once they're in the dance they're built to go further.

That being said, the fact of the matter is they need to show up for 60 regularly to get to the dance.

And the same freakouts were being had after they lost four in a row. Slumps happen. Let's see how they break out of it.

hard to pinpoint what even to get mad at. lots of people turning their fire on Sutter, but looking at 5 on 5 results our most productive forward this year is Ritchie. People have grown antsy about Huberdeau/Lindholm as well but also Kadri and Mangiapane have been real bad for 3 games. Then there's complaining about Weegar but Andersson/Hanifin have been terrible. Really the whole roster except Ritchie and Backlund look shaky

I think that was right after the whole team caught COVID from the Canes or Bruins though.. No such excuse this time

it's just more painful than most losing skids because of the circumstance and because of the hot start that preceded it

they are not close to being in danger so if Sutter manages to get every one on board with the system and style he wants long term by using these strange bench tactics now then so be it

It's the same every year, some folks love certain prospects. Sometimes they are right and players like Kyllington break through and become impact players, other times they are out to lunch.

Fact is the AHL is a big step down from the NHL. Unless your rights are owned by a bad team cracking an NHL roster is difficult.

Even though it is difficult, the path is clear. Know your job, and execute it consistently better than the next man.

Bitch about Lewis and Lucic all you like but they know their job, and shift in shift out they execute it better than the next man up.

Sutter, Treliving, or any one who shapes a roster is not sentimental. They want to win, and they will ####ing step on your throat to make that happen.
