If they added in Pitlick along with Valimaki it would bring cap going out to 3.3 and coming in is 3.675, so nearly a wash. Still though I think Valimaki for DeBrusk at this point is kind of like my thoughts on Dube in that he’s a Dman with top 4 potential and has a lot of runway left more so than DeBrusk. Add to this the complications of DeBrusk being deep at LW both on the big clubs and in the minors and the fact that DeBrusk would be yet another RFA and I can’t see the fit.
The only way I could is if the flames flipped him in a package along with Monahan to a club that was hoping to land DeBrusk.
Trade Pitlick + 3rd + Boltmann for DeBrusk
Then trade Monahan + DeBrusk + 1st/Valimaki for a big fish leading up to it at the trade deadline.

I'd way rather they get Tofolli than Debrusk.

DeBrusk doesn't move the needle. But Toffoli would.

But the underlying point is that you can't trade for everyone, you have to pick which hill you want to die on. And DeBrusk doesn't even create a speed bump. But Toffoli would make the 3rd line legit.

I wanted to bring in Toffoli the first time around.
Was told he was declining and stuff. Then MTL grabbed him at a reasonable cost and not to my surprise he was a leader and consistent finisher for an underwhelming team.

This is such a bad take. So when all is said and done you will have traded away Monahan, Debrusk, Pitlick, Boltmann, and a 1st and 3rd round pick - or Valimaki and a 3rd - for a probable rental at the deadline? Six assets for a who exactly? It better be someone like Auston Matthews for that haul, nd someone with many years left on their contract. Otherwise, really poor asset management. Really poor.

Talk about a big time get that literally fits into Sutters window. He’d be the third former king who’s won it all with big D to join the team and would instantly boost our top 6 and PP2.
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Backlund - Toffoli
Pelletier - Dube - Coleman
Lucic - Richardson - Lewis
Drool……
Edit: obviously pieces would have to move out so removed monny and Pitlick and slotted Dube to Center calling up Pelletier into 3rd line LW.

Is it though?? And did I say rental? Treliving has a history of adding players that either have term or a contract that will allow for term to be established, I certainly wasn’t suggesting that we give 6 assets away for nothing of course that would be poor assets management. I think too you’re ignoring the raises that will be given next season which will be substantial. We should be looking at guys like Toffoli who have better cost controlled contracts that fit Sutter’s window and who’s to say that deal of 6 assets has to be one deal? Lots of reasons to go all in with this roster though this year while also trying to achieve flexibility to be able to fit in Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Mangiapane and Kylington’s contracts.

Well, sure but there’s a few hurdles, the first being that Toffoli’s not even for sale. And second, that Calgary probably can’t make it work at all.

1) He might be available, because Montreal will be looking to make changes.
2) He costs $600k more than DeBrusk (say that out loud a couple times). At the deadline, his remaining capo hit will be about $150k more than DeBrusk's
3) Toffoli was just an example - someone that would actually help the team, as opposed to DeBrusk, who probably doesn't have any real impact

I agree about Debrusk. But I just don’t see Montreal moving away from Toffoli who is not that old, just had a career year, was their PO MVP (among skaters obv) and is arguably their current best player. The low cap hit only reinforces that.
The Flames don’t really need scoring help according to the stats, but if there’s a two way guy that’s able to replace, say, Pitlick or even Monahan, sure.

About as "interesting" as Bennett - Jankowski - Neal

Scoring Winger

Toffoli is sort of Montreal's Lindholm....good producer on a super value contract ($4.25 for 2 more seasons). You aren't getting him for spare parts, you would have to cough up some tangible assets.
I'm not saying he's anywhere as good as Lindholm, but Montreal likely values him the same way.

Would you guys do
Pitlick + 3rd + Boltmann for DeBrusk
And then
Monahan + DeBrusk + Valimaki or 1st for Toffoli + Lehkonen or Kulak depending on Valimaki/1st (Kulak if it’s Valimaki, Lehkonen if it’s a 1st) + 3rd

Does Boltmann have value now? Why are people including him in trades? I haven't followed the prospects lately, but last I remember he was considered a failed pick.

Well after somehow scoring 0 points last year, Boltmann has 7 points in 13 games this year as a defenceman.
