The Athletic piece at the start of the season was foreshadowing for this backslide.
Predictions included:
Bennett getting 50+ points. Lmao.
Giordano winning the Norris again this year? Jump the shark stuff.

It takes a hockey player maybe a month to change styles of play. This strategy he's using now wasn't what got the Flames into the playoffs last season.
They need to just go all-out attack and stop caring about being defensively sound. It's not working anyway.

I think Gaudreau is the issue, though I don’t think it’s necessarily his fault. I think the Av’s figured out how to quiet him, just give him zero space to work magic. The league took notice and he hasnt figures out how to work through it. His line mates spend too much time waiting for him to do something. I think he is too good of a player for this to last all season though.

That depends entirely on whether he plays in a fearful manner or not. Generally he looks like he's afraid to get hit, so he cheats with his buttonhook or tries to pickpocket guys. That is NOT going to work in the long haul.
Players and coaches are way too smart, and there's way too much video.

If you want to see a team actually getting stomped go watch the Leafs game.
Flames gave the other team a gift goal and didn't get a bounce all night. They were at least even in terms of play

Execution is the issue.
Last season they were making all their passes, controlling the middle of the ice with rapid puck movement and puck support. Moving the puck up the ice that way forces opposition D to back off and creates blue line turnovers to feast on.
The execution is not there yet this season.
Way too early to write anyone off. Did anyone see the Blues last year before Christmas? Not saying the Flames are that team, but they didn't suddenly become bad players or forget how to play. They just aren't executing consistently.
Practice practice practice.

Has that changed though? I mean, if he gets demolished, he’s done for. He doesn’t seem more afraid than before to me. But when he makes his first move someone is on him right away.

Once again, another loss where the goaltending (short of Rittich's mishap) and defense did their part, but offense generating nothing.
I thought Ryan and Lucic had really good games, Lindholm too. But, if those three are your best players during the game then you are not going to win very many games.

Enough of Treliving trying to plug holes to make a run for cup. Time to drain swamp already. People talk about a cup window? Not with this crew. Last year was entertaining.. this year is a disaster.

Outside of Tkachuk, Lindy and Hanifin everyone should be up for trade.

Build a first line around Lindholm and Tkachuk, two guys who work their ass off every game.

Have they just tuned Peter's out?
We cant get thru the neutral zone
We cant forecheck
Our forwards dontbackcheck
Seriously this is sad.
Way way too many passengers and or guys trying to.do it all themselves .
What happened....they are so discombobulated

Too fricken bad, we can't keep replacing coaches and rewarding players for bad work ethic.
Hopefully Peters really comes down hard on some of these players.

Game Takes: Coyotes 3 Flames 0
- Rittich cough up goal
- Calgary presses down 2-0 but can't solve Kuemper
- Line brawl in the second had Tkachuk drop the goaltender

Gaudreau - Monahan - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Lindholm - Bennett
Lucic - Ryan - Reider
Quine - Backlund - Frolik
Giordano - Andersson
Hanifin - Hamonic
Kylington - Stone
Talbot
Keep Monahan/Gaudreau together, give Tkachuk some real linemates for once. I hate Bennett as high as line two but at least the effort is usually there. Lucic deserves a bump up to line three as he made some real solid plays today. Best effort of anyone outside Rittich. Reider/Frolik can be interchangeable here as neither has done anything most of the season. Backlund would be lucky not to be scratched after tonight’s performance but Jankowski deserves the scratch more. Quine has been decent the few times he’s made it into the lineup. After looking at these lines, we need a right-side upgrade in the worst way. Lindholm is the only bonifide top 6 RW (if Tkachuk is pencilled in his natural LW position). Bennett, Reider and Frolik are all 4th liners/scratch material. Hard to make any changes on D given the injury to Brodie. Talbot was very good against Dallas and Vegas had Rittich’s number last time. I don’t know what the answer is truly. Train beers? Stick throwing tantrum? Big trade? Something needs to happen.
