though the OP listed a source of dubious reputation, the rumored ask had us giving up Bennett as part of the deal for Ovi

They signed him as a UFA, but yeah it could be sort of like that especially if we didn't lose anything substantial from the roster when trading for him.

In this case Bennett would be a long term loss for sure, but as the 3C from last season it's not an immediate substantial loss.

My scenario is a lot more plausible than yours BTW.

I like Bennett a lot, but Ovechkin would VERY likely do a lot more to help this team win in the next 4 years than Bennett would, and if the loss of Bennett can be offset by either Janko or Lazar stepping up as a solid 3rd line C option, then the Flames are way ahead.
My point was that in a few short years, the gulf between Bennett and Ovi will be alot smaller than it is now. Ovi is 31 and Benny won't be a third-liner forever. We would win the trade for a short time, but for the assets needed to make the deal, along with the cap hit, maybe it's not worth it-especially given the fact that he hasn't been able to lead a stacked team to the promised land.

That looks pretty accurate. But if it's the Flames you have to factor in BT Wizardry.

OV is basically a more talented, more consistent and much more physical version of Colborne

When I think of ovy the first comparison I think of as well is Joe colborne

Wait one scored 1 goal in 50 games and the other will go down as one of the 5 greatest pure goal scorers ever

But I guess they both wear skates when they play. So there's that

I think he meant a slightly shorter, better goal scoring version of Colborne.

I can see it.

He'd probably request that the Flames bring Colborne's #8 down from the rafters so he can wear it

Well I'd sure love to see him putting up hatties set up by Johnny against the Edmonton Pretenders.

You couldn't possibly find a better pure trigger man for Gaudreau anywhere (right now that is).

And seriously, the natural scoring talent is there that Ovie should be racking up goals until the end of his contract. And he's probably gonna be top 6 material until he retires (as I don't see him staying in the league till 40).

IMO he'd have to wear a number higher than the guy he was traded for (Bennett) .. 97 is open, right?
This is, of course.._if_ there is any weight to these rumours, which I sincerely doubt.

Obviously I'm too emotionally invested in this team, but Bennett and Kyllington were both guys we drafted where I immediately fist-pumped and probably muttered "*nsfl* yeah".. Obviously Oliver fell a LOT, but to me, the combined value of him, Sam and the two reported picks is essentially the max offer sheet compensation of 4x1st Rd picks. If that's what we're willing to spend, I'd rather see BT get gully and present Draisaitl with an offer sheet suggested by speculators on this site, structured to bring him to FA ASAP by ballooning his QO to something the Oil couldn't reasonably match.. Then package Sam for a cost controlled dman from a team such as the Wild or Ducks to lock down the best top4 in the league.

Or re-sign Versteeg.

With McDavid a lock to be a $10M cap hit and Drai in the 7-8 range they can't afford a $9.5M winger. Apparently the fact Subban makes $9M in the cap is the reason the Oilers passed on acquiring him last summer.

I did. Because the Capitals aren't trading Ovechkin to begin a rebuilding phase at this point, so they are looking at a star for star deal. Your proposal does not come remotely close to being viable.

Seriously, in what scenerio does a team place their franchise player on the trade block with the interntions of improving immediately? The only way the Capitals improve without Ovechkin is if they package Ovechkin with another asset to get another star forward like Crosby, McDavid, Laine or Matthews. Or they make a hockey deal for like a defensemen or goalie.
Ahh, now you're starting to think about what the Caps would need. This is good, because you can now go back to your proposal and understand just how bad it is from Washington's perspective.

BTW, Nashville made exactly that type of trade just this year. Also, Taylor Hall was Edmonton's franchise player right up until they lucked out on the McDavid draft. And the Oilers dealt him for immediate improvement.

There is no way they replace a 30-50 goal scorer. There is simple no way to replace and improve upon who is the best goal scorer of our generation
Washington would be looking for a player who replaces Ovechkin's 30-50 goals and offers a more well rounded game. Also, part of the motivation would be that a change at the top would spark the team's development enough for that final push.

So, of course, I hope you can now see why offering the Capitals a guy who would provide one third to one half of the scoring and some lottery tickets is not a viable proposal.

While I think this proposal is not real, it has it's merits. The Capitals get very valuable futures in the deal, but what they also get is massive amounts of cap space that they can utilize to improve their roster from other sources.

If they move him, they don't NEED to replace Ovechkin via the source they move him to.

The FAN obviously poo poo'd this rumor this morning. Funny that people think a team would give up a player of Gaudreau and Monahan's caliber for someone 10 years older than them.

If Ovie does get moved he is not returning a player that is 10 years younger and scored 10 or so points less last season than he did
