I doubt it'll be that much. VW might as well just buy back every TDI so than paying the 400 billion fine. And you can't extrapolate fines in US to everywhere else in the world, the fine structures are all different.

Man, rough couple of weeks for hipsters. First, finding out their VWs aren't the environmentally friendly cars they smugly thought they were, and now this morning hearing about man buns leading to permanent receding hairlines and baldness.

EPA now claiming VW rigged tests on other engines:
http://www.businessinsider.com/epa-v...obilesrepublic
Quote:
Volkswagen installed software that cheats emissions tests on more cars than previously known, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
VW has already admitted that it cheated US emissions standards, by
installing so-called defeat devices on 2009-2015 model year cars equipped with its 2.0 liter TDI engines.
The software is also on VW's 3.0-liter, V6 diesel engines, the US agency said Monday.

According to the EPA, cars affected by the latest notice of violation include diesel versions of the:
2014 VW Touareg
2015 Porsche Cayenne
2016 Audi A6 Quattro
2016 Audi A7 Quattro
2016 Audi A8
2016 Audi A8L
2016 Audi Q5
This notice of violation covers 10,000 cars sold between 2014-2016.
The EPA indicated that the models featured in the announcement are only the ones that have completed and failed its testing. The cars included on the list emit as much as nine-times the legal limit of nitrogen oxide (NOx) when operated on the road.
The agency said on a call with the media that its testing is still ongoing. As a result, it is possible more models will be added to the list.

I'm so curious what compensation will be like for existing owners. If I recall, it was pretty stiff for Mazda when they overrated the power on the RX-8. Luckily for them that was a low production model.

So question.... what will happen to all these newer model VW's? Will they be recalled? I've been looking at possibly purchasing a 2012 VW Jetta TDI but don't really know if I should

If you want a diesel then you don't have a lot of options. There will likely be a recall (it's going to take a while before the requirements and details of the fix are approved) but I would imagine some owners won't get it done knowing it will probably reduce power/torque numbers. I don't see any negative to buying one as if you have to bring it into VW for a recall it won't be on your dime or you could just choose to leave your car as is.

Wow, dude, I'm surprised you'd be considering that right now. Why would you? I'd only buy one if I was getting it for a fraction of its value.

I love the TDI's personally, I drive and have driven for quite some time a VW MK4 and have been looking at upgrading for some time now but after all this came out I've been holding my money waiting to see if people drop their prices significantly.
And looking at the market, I have not seen any really drop in price, everyone looks to be holding but no one is biting.

If you buy one now, do you get the cheque from VW? Or does the original owner?

I believe Kelly Blue book estimates a 13% decrease in value so good luck getting one for a "fraction" of it's value. That said I doubt they drop much further seeing you can't buy new ones so if you have a long commute and want a diesel you have few options.

That's because nobody knows what's going to happen. My money is on them de-tuning the car to meet regulations. So then you have a neutered vehicle. The TDI you love may not be what you end up buying after 'the fix'. I still think it's a crazy time to buy one.

Nope.

Despite the scandal over a cheat device installed in its diesel engines, Volkswagen continues to do well in Canadian sales.
It sold 5,715 light vehicles in October, up 8.3 per cent from last year.
