Said that he and the ownership had to respect Marty's wishes to move on.

St. Louis really hurt his reputation and legacy in Tampa and across the NHL over this. In the end I can't see how any of this is worth it for him. And all this because he wasn't chosen to be on the most difficult to choose team in all of sports? Just cannot imagine what is going through his head.

There has to be more to it than the fact that Yzerman didnt pick him for Team Canada right away. That would be downright childish.

Stevie Y's hands were tied by the Hobbit and his return will go alot further than the last few years of St Louis career.
Sure he is losing one of the better point producers in the NHL now but 2 years from now when Marty is 40, TBay wins this deal in a land slide.

I was watching it on TV.
The gist of it was that Yzerman was put between a rock and a hard place and if you want to know why you'd "better ask Marty."
And he knows, like we all know, that the Lightning are a worse team right now because of the trade, maybe the picks will make them a better team in the long-run, but trading your Captain and leading scorer and Stamkos' #1 setup man while you're contending for the playoffs isnt a great short-term solution.

I think MSL has given TB some under market contracts in the past and made big commitments to the team. Somewhere in there he expected something in return that didn't materialize and it really affected the relationship. It didn't affect his output though.
Could it have been the Olympic snub?
Something else?
I think we will find out in time.

A letter that says nothing. Pretty standard fluff.

As a fan that would almost piss me off even more.
The 14 years mean so much to you etc, but you were still willing to throw that away in the middle of a great season because of a perceived slight.

I haven't lost respect for St.Louis.
The guy won the Art Ross last season, and has been having a good year this year as well. There was no reason to leave him off the Olympic team, especially when they were naming Kunitz.
He signed a discount contract for Steve Yzerman. Loyalty is a two-way street and Yzerman didn't go to bat for St.Louis after St.Louis had left money on the table in his last contract.

I thought it was nice.
As to the trade, I think this was a good time for Tampa to sell high on St. Louis even without the circumstances.
Sure, he should be a good player for a season or two, maybe even more, but at his age holding on to such assets is a risk.
Also; being 1 of the last 4 teams in the playoffs does not mean a 1/4 chance to win it all. That's like saying Finland had a 1/4 chance to win olympic gold. Tampa is not even a legitimate longshot, and neither are the Rangers. Like many teams in the east they're only in the playoffs because they're in that conference.

Didn't go to bat for him?
Every report had Yzerman wanting him there and other guys voting him down.
Based on how Team Canada played and how MSL played during the Olympics it seems like a pretty good decision they had not having him on the initial roster. The team they built was awesome and MSL was very underwhelming and likely the worst forward on the team in the games he played.

Wow, Marty is a whiner and a pouter.
Pouts about being snubbed from Team Canada. Whines about ownership, despite them building a solid contender. Demands a trade, but will only waive his NMC for one team.
So many people were cheering him to be on Team Canada, because he is a 'heart and soul' guy. All I have to say to that is "HAHAHAHA..NO." How can you NOT lose respect for the guy?
I was discussing MSL with a friend. He mentioned how after St. Louis won the cup against Calgary, he gave a bitter interview about how it was good to stick it to Calgary since they gave up on him because of his size. --Does anyone else recall an interview to this effect?
What a puke.

St. Louis has a bad case of small man syndrome. It's all about him.

I believe it was Friedman that reiterated this in an interview on 960 in a segment a few days before the deadline- that MSL had said how satisfying it had been to defeat Calgary since they had cut him.

Which is junk and MSL knows it...the Flames plucked him out of the IHL when no one else in the league wanted him. And other teams around the league could've had him for a song...the sad sack Flames in that era had him bouncing up and down from Saint John numerous times in his year and a half here...had the Flames not taken him, or outright cut him, he'd be nowhere right now.
I believe he on record as saying as much at some point (likely well over a decade ago or so now) in an interview.
