Rooting doesn't usually involve wiping the phone, but each device is different

Unlocking your bootloader usually wipes your phone. You can do an Android backup and through the Nexus toolkit and it'll back up all your apps and settings though so it's not too much work to restore afterwards

Alright, so what's the verdict on this? How's the battery life after using it for a few days? Are most of the apps compatible with this phone and Kit Kat?

I'm up for a new phone and will be buying it outright off contract. At 1/2 the price of an iPhone 5S this is very tempting, but I did the Nexus 4 and switched back to my old iPhone after about 3 months because I missed things like iMessage and the app store etc. I'm pretty locked in to the apply ecosystem with my family having 2 macs, 2 Apple TVs, a couple of iPhones and an iPad Air. I'm so torn between getting this for $399 vs over $800 for an iPhone 5S.

I'd grab the Nexus 5, and slowly try to detach yourself from being all-in on Apple... eventually you will anyways.

I think you answered your own question. None of those things have changed with a Nexus 5.

Very true. Battery drains very quick, and the speakers suck.

Think you missed his point. If Yellefan the fully locked into the Apple jail/ecosystem he might as well do himself a favour and get the latest iPhone instead of the latest Nexus. He's just going to want to switch back if that's case. He mentioned iMessage specifically so he might as well save himself the trouble and stick with the iPhone 5s/c.

What is this apple ecosystem everyone keeps mentioning?
My setup is an iPhone, iPad, and Macbook Pro. What conveniences am I getting by keeping this setup instead of getting the Nexus?

Well for instance I use iMessage-- messages pop up on my phone, my iPad and my mac. I use iCloud to share photos of my daughter with family members, I can immediately add photos to the photo stream from whichever device I'm using. I subscribe to iTunes in the cloud so that all of my music is available to all of my devices wherever I am, etc. That's the ecosystem I'm referring to. I've also invested many dollars over time to purchasing apps with will work on all of my iOS devices.

I guess the thing I'm asking myself is whether or not Apple products are still worth the premium. From what I am reading, this Nexus 5 is a very comparable phone as far as specs go to the iPhone 5S-- is paying twice as much for a similar product worth it? I don't know. I'm trying to convince myself that I don't have to be locked into the services that apple gives me. I loved my experience with the Nexus 4 last year, but in the end the fact that I'm all apple with everything else won me back.

Is the Nexus 5 going to help me break free from that? By the responses so far it sounds like a no. I'm just not sure where to draw that line. $400 vs $800 is making me seriously consider it.

Apple devices and Apple Apps are best friends with each other and work great with other iDevices but are kind of anti-social and don't play with the other kids very well. Your AppleTV, iCloud, iMessage etc aren't going to play well with your Nexus 5, it will obviously work flawlessly with the newest iPhone.

It works great for some people, we've see numerous posts on the Tech forum from people just going with the next iPhone because "It's an iPhone", it cuts the decision making process out for some, which works for them. I'm a long time Macbook user but when I found myself with an iPad and iPhone for a while I had to get out as being locked into that ecosystem just doesn't do it for me.

I'm sure someone more techy could desribe it better, moving off topic again. So yeah, if sticking with iMessage is important, stick with the iPhone. I got over BBM when I gave up my Blackberry way back when though.

Even though my last two phones were iPhones before I got a nexus 5, it was very easy for me to break away from Apple products. I stopped using iCloud a long time ago, as it was devastating to my phone battery life. Instead, I've been using the auto-upload from Dropbox to sync photos (which can also be shared to anyone).

Syncing your calendars and contacts is pretty easy to set up as well. I have my ical set up with my Google calendar, so my macbook/pc/phone/tablet/ipod all have the same events.

I've also had Google Music for quite a while now. I used it on my iPhone with a 3rd party app, and now I still have all my songs from iTunes available on my Nexus to stream.

I really haven't felt like I missed out on too much by switching. I didn't own a ton of paid apps for my iPhone, but even if you do, you'll have some money to spare if you switch.

Well I have slept on it and decided that I`m going to do the Nexus 5 instead of the iPhone 5S. I think that this time I will go into it with a different attitude about it and try to embrace some alternatives to iCloud etc. I just can`t justify the price difference.

Thanks for all of your thoughts on the matter, they helped me see things a little bit differently.

I have a few Apple devices, and one of the appeals is that they do play nice with each other. The iPad and Apple TV are the most inseparable of the "family" for me. Streaming content between the Apple TV is easy, flawless, and ultra convenient.

I see my Macbook Air and my iPhone as different beasts. I could swap the Macbook with a Windows machine very easily (I have other Windows devices at home and work already anyway), and I am tempted to try an Android device for my next phone. The computer and phone seem more independent and interchangeable for me.

Obviously this is just one man's opinion.

White 32g came in today and I went right to the WIND store to port from Telus.

Pretty sexy phone, can't believe how fast these phones are these days; my first gen iphone 4 is a slug

I think the initial Nexus 5 sold out messages were to minimize the re-sellers. I haven't seen a sold out message in days, although delivery is 2-3 weeks. But I suppose if you did want it asap you could pay a $66.56 premium.

Anyone else seeing a problem where you lose connectivity after sending a SMS message? I've seen it a few times and it seems to be a fairly common problem. Hopefully they fix with a patch.

Yeah. I've been having this problem on the telus network. Just tried to boot up the phone today for the first time and had it lose connection shortly after. It's been super frustrating. I went to the telus store and tried a new sim card which didn't solve the issue or get my connection back. From the sounds of it, it's a global issue as well. I'm going to contact Google tomorrow to see what they recommend.

In the meantime, looks like the Nokia DT-900 Wireless Charger at TBooth and Wireless wave stores are $30.

Confirmed to work with the Nexus 5/7

Has anyone tried recording video? I have watched a few sample videos on Youtube and some reviews (MKBHD and Technobuffalo) stated that the mic was of excellent quality for recording video. However, when I record video I am getting a lot of hissing/static.

I will have to check this out. Do all locations carry this charger?
