I've never met the guy in person, but Rhett does come across as a bit of a lazy d-bag on the radio. Definitely the weakest of the 3 on the morning show imo. I always kind of wonder why he's even doing the show...he doesn't really seem to enjoy it that much. You've got to think there are some better ex-Flames to bring on...Berezan perhaps? Also, Conroy really needs to stop pretending he's an executive and get behind a mic already.

Will he? If he plays 4-5 years of AHL hockey at an average salary (say similar to someone like Ferland) he'd make a whopping $67,500 per year. His tuition alone for 2 years at BC would be more than a years salary. Add in all of the other things that full athletic scholarships cover and you're looking at 2 years or more of AHL salary to cover the rest of that education. People have a very misguided sense of how much non-NHL players actually make.

If you're going to make character attacks against someone on the radio, they should at least have some basis in facts. In this case, there's absolutely no reason to believe that Gaudreau is returning to BC because it's easier or because he's scared of the NHL.
What he said was pretty much the equivalent of someone going on the radio and saying that Rhett retired because he preferred going to bars rather than to the gym. Who cares if it's true as long as it's just an opinion, right?

I think there are also as many people that enjoy Warrner's views and insights. When he called out Iginla, he got ripped but was bang on about the way he was playing at the time.
None of the other Fan 960 announcers would go near that for fear of losing their job. People appreciate that he (Warrner) is his own man and no one controls him, which occasionally leads to off comments like the one that shouldn't have been directed at "Johnny Hockey"
I love guys like Conroy, but feel listening to him on the air would be like a "Tony Robbins" video with little insight or substance

I think his returning to BC shows a possible lack of commitment to pro hockey. He's putting playing pro as secondary to College. I'm not saying this is wrong but for the Flames it isn't good news. I don't know if size has a lot to do with it either. He's a shifty player who avoids the hits, his style isn't going to change or improve his pro chances by adding 5 or 10 lbs.

Yeah, I get that you need someone to be a bit of a shat disturber (and that would not be Conroy for sure!), but it doesn't seem like there's ever a lot of unique insight or thought behind his comments...he just says whatever comes to him at the time. I get that he played in the league and that he could offer potentially new viewpoints, but I'm not sure he really does. He's no JR.
You're right in that he doesn't care about losing his job....he doesn't seem to care much about anything really.

Based on that quote, it sounds like his plan is to sign next year.

Agreed.
I don't need to listen to 960 when Pat and Ryan interview Ken King and you can hear the fear in their voices, trying to avoid stepping on his holy toes. Because heaven forbid you actually ask tough questions about a GM who has been AWOL or a President residing over one of the worst teams in the NHL.
I'd much rather listen to Warrener, who has some opinions and isn't afraid to call his shot from time to time.

That was definitely pretty shameful of the station. I'm still waiting for them to ask the Flames management one single question about what happened with ROR.
I actually think the only guy on the Fan who speaks his mind and tells it like it is with the Flames, is Mike Rogers. I think he's kind of under appreciated around here.

Indeed. 3 instead of 2 he says. Makes it seem like he's doing no more than 3 years.
Good. Hopefully the team is on the upswing by then and he can join a better atmosphere.

You are forgetting the signing bonus and the fact he would most definitely see some time in the NHL.

I am quite perplexed that Mike doesn't get called in for a regular segment - he is the Flames broadcaster who is heard from the least. Simmer gets called in far more for his (worthless) opinion, obviously Maher does, and so does Kerr.

So another $200k, yep set for life
And he would not "most definitely" see time anywhere, unless of course you're telling me you transported to the future.

I can't stand Rhett.
It takes a special kind of scumbag to criticize a kid for wanting to stay in school. Especially a kid who is FAAAAR from a lock to make the NHL.
Do you know how fast an ELC dries up once you buy a house, car and help your parents out? It's not a lump sum either and if he doesn't make the NHL then he is stuck with a very average AHL salary and no applicable skills to enter the work force with once that dries up.
If there is one type of person I would NEVER take life advice from as a young adult, it's a pro athlete. Silver Spoon.

He's definitely nowhere near set for life with that kind of payout on an ELC but even if he doesn't pan out as an NHLer he's going to get one or two pro contracts from GM's like Feaster/Weisbrod who love the guys credentials and hockey IQ.
Its the right move and the smart move to stay at school. Take your time, finish your degree and try to bulk up for another year or two....not missing anything up here anyway.
