both lanes are for going the speed limit. if the car in the right hand lane ahead of you is going slower, then by all means pass (at the posted rate) in the left lane and then return to the right lane ahead of the slow moving vehicle.

Does anyone have a good reason to say that high-beam flashing is legal though? The law says you must dim your high beams within a certain range of another car. Why wouldn't this omit flashing them? In my experience, the law is absolute, so telling a judge "I just turned them on for a second" is IMO not a very convincing argument to get a ticket reduced. You still turned them on within range of another car.

On that web page you will note Step 4: "Look at the dimmer tab on the bottom of the mirror that should only be used at night. During the day, push the tab all the way back. At night, pull the tab forward only if a car with bright headlights is behind you."

Sometimes these driving rules threads scare me. The horn is a far safer method for letting someone in front of you know they are doing something unsafe/annoying. I find it very distracting when lights are flashed from a car traveling behind me. Drivers are already distracted enough, they do not need flash spots and less dilated pupils to hinder them. The only time that I can think of that I flash my lights at someone is to let them know that they have forgotten to turn on their lights. I think for asking someone to move over a horn works just as well. If your intent it truly to get someone's attention, I think the horn is just as effective. If your intent is to be annoying in return, as some sort of payback for what you see as annoying behavior then you are doing a good job at being annoying, you are also being part of a larger problem with drivers on the road today.

The poster who tried to imply that there is possibly an age (experience) relationship between the two sides of this argument is stereotyping, and also totally correct.

As I read some other posts I realized that I also use the light flash to warn drivers of something. When it is a matter requiring immediate attention such as a deer crossing the road. If you need to flash someone to warn them of something requiring immediate action and is a matter of safety it can be an affective tool.

I agree that a horn's origin is sometimes hard to pinpoint. However, I find that anytime I hear a horn I think about what I am doing and whether it could in anyway be directed towards me. The desired affect has been reached.

I fear that it is in fact you that do not understand the intent of the law. Slower traffic keep right, and keep right except to pass, are in fact directed towards people going below the speed limit. The intent of those signs is not meant to make it easier for people to speed.

please cite the rule you are referring to.

so, for i dont know how many times now, i agree! if you are not capable of doing the speed limit, you should be in the right hand lane until you can exit the roadway. and to clarify, you should stay in the right hand lane and keep the left lane clear so that people who want to pass you, can do so safely.

do you agree that the left lane is for doing the speed limit while passing those slower moving cars that are in the right lane?

Let me just say that the left/right thing does not bother me nearly as much in the city as it does on the highway. I generally expect city driving to be a giant cluster ****, that way when it (occasionally) isn't, it's a pleasant surprise.

1) The right lane on the highway is for driving, except to pass.

2) The left lane is for passing.

3) Law enforcement is for catching and deterring speeders. Highway drivers driving the speed limit in the left lane on a highway are not.
