Dang. Here goes anyway.
With the taxi shortage a hot topic, and with everyone's desire to keep those safe on one of the biggest party nights of the year..
Why doesn't the C-Train run until 2 or even 3 am on New Years Eve?
(or Day depending how you look at it)

Im sure this has been asked before but I dont remember seeing it.
Is there an ETA as to when the Blackfoot Trail over Glenmore construction might be finished?
Its really beginning to be a driving hazard when someone drives by there who hasnt driven past slows down to 60 on Glenmore even though there isnt any workers present or any construction on Glenmore itself.
Thanks

They are only working in 'construction season', I believe, so it won't be finished until next fall.

Bunk,
Hope you're feeling better.
Reasons I've heard, why the trains won't be running late
- Buses will have already quit for the evening, so riders will not be able to take a bus home
- Actually very little users will ride that last train.
My questions;
A large fraction of the ridership is still walking distance from home.
Secondly, how were these forecasts created?
Data based upon past years of running C-Trains late on New Years Eve? That would be a fun case study to propose to some co-op students
"hey we're going to have you sit on the trains and count the riders between 12:30am and 2:30 am on January 1st."
My suggestion. Run the trains late only twice a year.
Halloween & New Years Eve. Heavily promote that there will not be buses, at the stations. Social Media Marketing is free, and the city has shown they excel at it.
I can't see the costs being so exorbitantly high to save a life each holiday. Besides, they are artistic holidays. Use the % art budget.

No, I don't believe that's true.

I think you should lobby the local Councillor Druh Farrell - I think she'd ultimately be the one to initiate a review/change.

It's a cost-benefit consideration. Everyone seems to say they will use late night service, but when it's offered, even during our biggest party time, no one actually does seems to use it. But, I think it's worth looking at again. I know some Councillors will likely press the issue.

Does that mean the speed signs arent applicable at the moment?
And if they arent then why were they left up? Would it be to costly to remove 10 signs?

This is a big factor in our system. The LRT is great, but most people are still a few KM from their home at the LRT station. So we'd have to also continue running all the feeder buses late for it to be more attractive for people to use transit as a late night option.

Maybe the police should setup there and generate some cash, in the name of public safety of course, ala the speed traps we see?

The question then becomes...why have the speed alteration signs been left up? It is kind of confusing and somewhat dangerous since most folks seem to do 100 on Glenmore in the first place, and anyone slowing down to 60 ends up nearly getting rear-ended.
Are the signs going to be up and in effect for another 6-8 months, then?

The exit from northbound blackfoot to westbound glenmore would be way too dangerous if the speed limit was not reduced.

At least for Westbound traffic...that temporary yield onto Glenmore right now probably wouldn't be very good at 80km/h. Also, in that stretch most people struggle to hit 80 anyways, it's around Macleod that everyone guns it!

Bunk, Thanks for your replies.
Has late night service been tried before on a NYE, Halloween or even Stampede type event? Any data to share?

That's rather curious.
The City of Calgary owns the sidewalks and the the pathway system, yet wants (err....make that " requires") the owner or occupant of the property adjacent to the sidewalk or pathway to clean the sidewalk or pathway.
So why are there liability concerns for ploughing City streets, but not for clearing City sidewalks and pathways?
I find this relatively recent Maclean's editorial to be particularly insightful:
http://www2.macleans.ca/2011/03/17/d...the-sidewalks/

Bunk, is it illegal for home owners to pile snow on the street, rather than their lawn? If so, someone from the city needs to drive through Arbour Lake, and West Citadel. There is basically no street parking available on the side streets, because everyone is putting all the snow on the road instead of their grass.
