Crappy first set from both guys. Tsonga made a supreme effort to hold at 5-5, Federer couldn't.

Vasek defeats Stepanek in three sets (tie-breaker in the 3rd set) to next face Feds in round 2 in Cincinnati.

Genie will be on Sportsnet (regular SN) at 5PM MT tonight. She's on Center Court. Milos is playing at the same time on one of the other courts. Vasek is up next as a sacrifice to Lord Federer.

Maybe Vasek can pull off another upset? (both baby Fed and Berdych lost their matches earlier today)

I imagine he's gonna get angry Fed after that disappointing performance Sunday against Tsonga. Though Pospisil did take him to 3 sets last year in Basel which is a pretty impressive accomplishment in Fed's home country.

Vasek and Fed going to a 3rd set (Pops breaks Roger to take the second set 7-5 after losing set 1 in a tie-breaker). Come on Vasek.

Ugh, well so much for that, Roger has two breaks in set 3 and currently leads 4-1.

Roger takes the match 6-2 in set 3. Tough luck of the draw for Vasek, but at least he forced a 3rd set.
Edit - Milestone win for Roger (his 300th Masters 1000 match victory)

Looks like Genie dropped her first set, though she won a few games, at least.
Raonic is putting the final touches on a major beat-down. 6-2 6-2 over Ginepri.

Genie's offseason improvement plan
1. Work on the serve
2. Work on the serve
3. Work on the serve
4. Work on the serve
5. Work on the serve
I think every other player has figured out they can tee off on her second serve. And when she's barely at 50% first serve, it's not going to help.

Much better second set though. Her first serve was over 80%, I think.

Genie just doesn't really know how to play the game yet. She plays boom or bust all the time, it's either a winner or an error by her, her opponents don't need to hit a lot of winners. She doesn't really force her opponent to play too many extended points and she gifts so many points. She played better tonight but she still didn't play very well and is slumping badly. Tournament next week is an easier field so hopefully she can string at least a couple wins together if only to play the matches.

With a little more analysis Genie is really not having that good a year without the majors. 8 out of the 16 tournaments she's entered she's lost in her first match (this includes majors). Her ranking is inflated by doing well at the majors against few to no points to defend, but really she's closer to being the 25th best player in the world than the 5th. Still her first full year on tour so hopefully she's learned some things, but her play seems to be getting worse which is troublesome.
