It was a little underwhelming, given the high expectations after last season. I don’t know what I was hoping for, but this seemed kind of slow and plodding except for the grocery store suspense.

That describes pretty much every episode last season

Not everything has to be fast and kinetic to be good. They're establishing these characters and deepening the significance of Joel and Elle's relationship and the rift between them. I like that there are some good people at the settlement and a semblance of government and humanitarianism there. It's going to make whatever chaos to come hit that much more.
The grocery sequence had me on edge. I'm enjoying these characters and the canadian scenery a lot (believe this season was filmed in BC around Whistler and Vancouver).
Edit: Looks like there was some AB filming, with the snow covered scenes filmed out in Exshaw. I knew the backdrop during the scouting sequence looked familiar.

thanks to all the video game people here who managed not to spoil that over the last two years
It’s been spoiled many times in this thread.
Powerful episode. Rains of Castermere vibes. Stunning. On the other hand my interest in the rest of this season just plummeted. Very disappointed in the creative decisions. And I don’t mean the shocker this episode.
They changed up some stuff or the order of things versus the game so far. I liked the incorporation of the fungus highspeed network to isolate them in the lodge. But enjoying the tension.
The internet went crazy back in the day and unfortunately I assume there will be the usual dumb hatorade shenanigans again. Even had that in our forums here.
EDIT: And it was cool to see Gustavo Santaolalla in the band of the party scene. We were like "hey, we know that guy!"
They did a good job with this for us non game players who had no idea this was coming because the promotional material has a scene in it where Ellie is pissed at Joel and says "you swore". That scene hasn't been shown in the show yet so I kept thinking he was going to get out of that mess somehow. But now it's clear that interaction between them already happened and will be shown later as a flashback more than likely. She found out what he did earlier on somehow and that must have been the real reason she was so pissed at him all the time, and not just teenage angst.
Anyways, they just killed off the main reason to watch this show, at least for me. This would have been like killing Rick Grimes in season 2 of TWD. I guess we'll see how they do without Joel going forward, unless there is some other twist coming I just don't see another character that can carry the show liek Pedro/Joel.
HBO is continuing their Podcasts after each Episode. Hosted by Troy (voice and actor of Joel in the game), Craig Mazin (show creator) Neil Druckmann (video game creative director/writer/creator).
Good discussion about the information delivery system being different in the show versus the video game. Abby actor (Kaitlyn Dever) originally being in the running for Ellie in a potential Last of Us movie years ago, also never knew she was Nathan Drake's daughter.
That was intense! I've never played the game, so I had no idea that was coming. Pretty ballsy to kill off a main character so early in the series, especially after the show was just renewed for a 3rd season. Obviously this frees up Pedro Pascal to make more movies and Mandalorian stuff. Good for him I guess. Bad for the show IMO.
I'll still watch, but it's gonna suck not having his character in the show anymore.
It feels like Glenn from The Walking Dead and the second last season finale of Bates Motel. Those moments really upset fanbases, and more than a few people I knew bailed, myself included.
