C'mon, Penner or Setoguchi, sign somewhere. I don't even care where or for how much. Just to take the edge off. I'm seeing things!

Exactly, however he may well have been promised a game in order to take a year off his ELC

A lot of us are at wits end for some real player news. It's been dead quiet since mid July and this possibility got us all excited. The one thing I would say is that he's been on this course for a while and you'd think he's done some homework on places he'd like to play. Is it unreasonable to wait this long to make a decision? Probably not but if it's down to 4-5 teams, what is there left to talk about?

It's not on him to sign in order to make us happy and satisfy our curiosity but the dead calm for the past month has made people including myself antsy for some real news. Hell, a penner or setoguchi signing (not by us obviously) would break up the doldrums of August.

How does this make any sense? This is the only semblance of news right now. If it wasn't happening, there would be nothing but tumbleweeds. Wanting more news (or more relevant news) really has no bearing on this situation.

And not that this is directed at you, but why can't anyone who's tired of this (or not interested) simply abstain from this thread or topic?

August sucks.

According to this website the Penguins offered Hayes a chance to compete for a spot on Malkin's wing:

Pens pitch made by Hayes relative Tom Fitzgerald and Bill Guerin

Screw the Pens too. They're a has been team who are desperate to fill holes on the wing. It truly does reek of desperation of a cup champ in the past five years, as to how far they have fallen. They still finish top 3 in the East regularly, but that doesn't really say a whole lot.

Maybe because he didnt believe he was bigger than the game? and just glad to have the opportunity to play professional hockey in the NHL?

Of course he was (although, in Gaudreau's situation, I believe he would have burned the ELC year and collected the signing bonus whether he played in Vancouver or not).

There's a huge difference between promising a guy NHL games at the end of the season to get the player his signing bonus and burning a year off his ELC (especially when you're in the Flames' situation of being well out of the playoffs), and promising a guy an NHL roster spot to start the season.

To me " a chance to compete for a spot on Malkin's wing" means almost nothing other than maybe a couple of exhibition games with Malkin. GM's are pretty good at making such promises as if they are significant.

How about a poll? I like polls especially in situations like this where everybody is waiting. Not to mention being in the doldrums of some kind of black hole it seems lately.

Where do you think he signs?

Flames
Bruins
Rangers
Florida
Colorado

Am I missing anybody?

Sorry to add to the off topic Gaudreau talk, but technically he did not burn an ELC year from a Flames perspective.

Gaudreau being 21 yeas old as of September 15, 2014 meant he had to sign a 3 year ELC per the CBA.

If he had waited till next year to sign, as a 22 year old as of September 15, 2015 would mean he would have signed a 2 year ELC per the CBA.

So regardless if he signed in 2014 or 2015, his ELC would still have ended after the 2015-2016 season (assuming he would burn 1 year of the 2 year ELC like he did this year). He just got a year's signing bonus + salary for 1 NHL game in terms of advantages to signing this year.

Mark Divver @MarkDivver
Not looking good for #bruins on Kevin Hayes. I'm being told Rangers and Avs appear to have inside track.

Rangers have probably had the inside track since April.

I'd thank my poll suggestion if I could. Oh well. Maybe a better member can suggest it and it might happen!!

This is surprising to me... If it's true it kind of gives some insight into his priorities. Obviously playing for a contender this year isn't as valued to him. Nor is playing at home if the Avs are a finalist. Might indicate he values opportunity to play now and playing for a team that is set to improve into a contender in the future.

If the flames are still in on it at all they might be able to make a similar case as Colorado... But also have gaudreau + Arnold as a draw as well.

Color me confused... How do the Rangers (Eastern Conference Champs) and the Avs (3rd best season overall) give you the insight that Hayes doesn't value playing for a contender?

Maybe if the list was the Sabres and the Oilers...
