Yup. The salary cap isn't $39 million anymore.

Didn't hear it myself, but I'm sure they'll have it up on the Fan shortly.
If Gaudreau is wanting to wait...then I think you need to trade him. You can't let that NTC kick in and give the player further leverage.
|
Yeah i heard it...thats what he said, but im 100% positive that Friedman thinks the NTC is a 5 team that JG CANT be traded to instead of one he can be dealt too. Even after it was said by Steinburg as to what it was...it didnt seem to click in because he stated that "it really doesnt change things that much".
How does going from 31 potential buyers to 5 not change the dynamics in something like this??
All of this was because EF believes the Flames want to keep him and JG wants to possibly stay (depending on $$ and term of course) but also wants the market established by the other UFA guys.
If he isnt signed (or agreed to a deal) by the 25th...he has to be jettisoned before that clause kicks in or BT is just screwing the teams abilities to maximize returns.
Should never have ever even gotten to this point IMO.

It doesn't change things that much because I think both sides want to get a deal done and it will get done. It doesn't change things because the Flames are not trading him.

Looks like an asset management crisis event is about to unfold.
My itchy "Fire Treliving" trigger finger gets reeeaaallly itchy if this hasn't been resolved before that NTC kicks in. Can't twaddle about twiddlin his thumbs on this.

If it's 5 teams that he can't be traded to, that leaves 26 that he can. Doesn't really change things that much.

I am starting to lean that way that both sides want to get it done.
It could be just like when Johnny signed at the last minute before the start of camp in 2016. He didn’t want to miss any hockey so he signed the best offer at the last minute.
This is the exact same situation. Flames table their best offer and also go out and get the best trade offers. Johnny has until 12pm on the 27th to sign or he gets traded.
If Johnny wants to stay he will sign

Im not sure they can even wait til the 27th...I think that if they deal him, it has to be at the draft on the 23rd or other teams may go another direction depending on assets being used.
Hard to give up a 2021 1st in a deal when its already been used...just as an example.
Dunno...its russian roulette to let it get to the 28th, thats for sure. It would be BT's death knell to let him get to UFA and see him walk for nothing.

Can he even officially officially sign before the 28th? Doesn't the NTC kick in at the exact instance he's eligible to sign an extension?
Of course they can agree to terms beforehand, but that would leave some risk.
The 5 team NTC is tough because he can say:
PHI
TBL
VGK
PIT
NYR/SJ/NYI/TOR/EDM/DET
ie. the 1 team he wants, and another 4 that wouldn't be bad for a year, but who simply don't have the room (or desire) to make a deal.

Based on the agents comments, the Flames should definitely be proceeding to trade the player.

One of the conditions that Johnny re signs should be that Eric Francis gets the can.

Sure sucks that the expansion draft is jamming stuff up for Gaudreau.

The Athletic posted an article today on Gaudreau... What seems to get lost in translation is how good Gaudreau has been since coming here. Since 2014-2015 Gaudreau is 11 in total scoring:
Patrick Kane 514 game 595 points
Connor McDavid 407 games 574 points
Sidney Crosby 489 games 556 points
Brad Marchand 504 games points 529
Nikita Kucherov 463 games points 529
Alex Ovechkin 518 games 506 points
Blake Wheeler 527 games 506 points
Leon Draisaitl 478 games 506 points
John Tavares 520 games 504 points
Nathan MacKinnon 491 games 497 points
Johnny Gaudreau 519 games 493 points
Nicklas Backstrom 516 games 486 points
Claude Giroux 528 games 481 points
Artemi Panarin 433 games 473 points
Evgeni Malkin 422 games 472 points
I mean, I understand why some fans find him frustrating, and he isn't a great playoff performer (and there's some variance above wrt games played).... but if he wants to sign a fair long term deal here, I think you sign him...replacing his production isn't a small thing
