I don't cheer for losses/tanking, but man at this point, it may be best we continue sucking and get ourselves a top 5-10 pick/lottery chance

I think this is a good year for the Flames to target some early 2nd round picks when unloading UFAs and making pre deadline trades.

There's got to be a high level of uncertainty outside maybe the top 10, so a good chance to grab some prospects who might have gone higher in a year with a better chance to scout them.

Hope for a run on the D early and we get a shot at this kid.
I see Sam Bennett 2.0 when I watch Kent Johnson

Wow... the Flames have a legit chance at being a bottom 3 team in the league. I knew it was bad, but that’s crazy.

Which is super weird since they play nothing alike. Bennett compable I'm draft year Doug Gilmour. Johnson is more like Marner.

Most of the early 2nd round picks are owed by teams out of the playoff race. So I don't know if those are on the table.

Unrelated to your point, but we also have to remember Seattle slots in at #3 pre-lottery so right now the Flames are in the sixth spot by point percent, but that really will be the 7th spot.

This is also the year Phoenix forgoes their 1st, which wouldn't impact the Flames first at this stage.

Johnson has nowhere near the vision that Marner had at the same age.

Plays more of a hard nosed game than marner too. I dont get that comp tbh.

The uncertainty in the draft means the Flames should be hoarding picks, no matter the round. A prospect who could have been a late riser in a normal draft might fall to the later rounds. It's a total crap shoot so it's better to have as many lottery balls as possible.

If you can get 7th round picks for Ritchie, Nordstrom, Leivo, Nestorov, Stone, Simon, Rinaldo, then do it. Bennett should be traded, even if it is for a 2nd, same for Rittich. Ryan should get you a 3rd or 4th rounder and this has to happen; DO NOT keep him and think of re-signing him, he's too small for his role.

As for the core, if Treliving and Sutter have identified which ones are going, they should make sure that whatever trade they make will include some picks coming in as well.

Here's the NHL 2021 Draft Lottery / Mock Draft Simulation.

But remember, only the first simulation counts.

I really don't want the Flames to win the lottery this year because the next couple of drafts look to have amazing players

I think you are confusing him with Beniers. Johnson is not a hard nosed player at all, he is a skill guy.

Does it count as a lottery win if we win the second overall pick?

Edit: found the answer

Beginning with the 2021 draft, only the first two picks will be subject to the lottery instead of the top three, and no team can move up more than 10 picks. Starting in 2022, no team will be able to win the draft lottery — for either of the first two spots — more than twice in a five-year span.

Powers kind of scares me as a 1st overall pick, givers me Tyler Myers vibes. I was really impressed with Beniers in the WJC, some scouts seem to think he'll top out as a 2nd line Centre, but I thought he looked to have elite potential. Dylan Guenther is also intriguing out of Edmonton in the WHL.

So looks like we can win the lottery in 2021 and won't count as one of the two wins in a5 year period. So we can also win in 2022 and 2023.

Looks like our next three f1st round draft picks will be Power, Wright and Bedard

I'm sick as hell of drafting #6 and not having a 1C. Our remaining games against Ottawa will be key, have to lose those in regulation

Powers looks like the classic big + can skate overrated player. Scouts see all the potential if the player can actually learn to play hockey well. Those types seem to have a higher than normal bust rate.

He looks a lot like Ekblad but maybe that's just me. I think he's a legit #1D but I don't think he's much of a "sexy" pick. I think it's tough when a D is projected to be #1 because everyone wants that dynamic point scoring forward.
