The Stewart stat doesn't matter to me, but god damn Kane has been a beast. I'd buy out Brouwer and bring in Kane if the price isn't insane.

If this team had any draft assets, Kane would probably be a Flame.

For those keeping score the Flames paid 0 for Stewart.

There's a lot of work to be done to this team. filling Roster weaknesses, erasing this fragility thats crept into the team since Gully took over, the coaching. And doing all of this while watching the first 3 rounds of the draft go by as it stands now.
I feel for guys like Smith and Gio who are on the back nine of their respective careers wasting good seasons on a failed experiment.
Then for guys like Monny and Gaudreau who have had great years as well who have wasted a prime year putting up points on a failed experiement.
I don't feel bad for Treliving other than having a coaching hire with the "this is my guy" stamp attached to him. Could potentially cost him his job.
Given that it's been well reported that ownership wanted playoffs and this was the expectation, things could get real ugly throughout the organization.

It was a decent trade if that first round pick was somewhere between 17-31. Now that we know it was a lottery pick in a very strong draft where there are a couple of potential franchise players, yes it was obviously brutal. I just cannot believe Treliving didn't lottery protect our 1st rounder. If we miss the playoffs in 2018 then Isles get our 2019 1st rounder.

Just to correct you on a little thing I keep seeing you mention, there's no such thing as an option to protect a draft pick or not. It's a common misconception. The term stems from quite literally if you are making the playoffs it's not a lottery pick, since playoff teams are automatically ineligible, and then if you miss it's a lottery pick. No option whatsoever to protect a pick or not.

Serious question, buried probably in my post above.
What was different last year?
Same coach, same roster. Better overall, consistent goaltending, though Elliot was lights out in a key stretch. No Wideman distraction at the back.
Mentally strong comment etc, I don’t think that has regressed. This team battled and gained that experience last year so it’s not knowing what it takes.
So again, what has changed over this time last season?

Actually yes you can lottery protect a pick in a trade. I know you think you're %100 certain of this, but you're %100 wrong.
I think Ottawa just dealt a lottery protected pick in the Duchene trade. A few other teams in the last few years have as well.

When people say lottery protected they mean the common practice of deferring a pick to the next season if the team does X that is included in many trades.

I'll give it a try. The way I see it, this is squarely a .500 hockey team during GG's whole tenure that has relied entirely on crazy winning streaks to get anywhere at all, which in a sense has masked us being a .500 hockey team at heart. Last year we squeaked into the playoffs with a freakish 10 game hot streak. This year we climbed back in with a 7 game winning streak, but the difference is we immediately offset that 7 game winning streak with a 7 game losing streak and it spiraled out of control from there.

Oh no, don't get me wrong, I was relaying what I understood from the explanation I heard from Steinberg on the radio about two weeks ago. If someone who knows better can clarify it by all means please do. Steinberg said it pretty much just as I tried to. I didn't know a thing about the term before then, just thought I'd pass along the same thing I'd heard.

How much toughness do Vegas, Tampa, Pittsburgh, and Nashville have in their top 9 forwards?
We left that era a while ago.

Aside from what some people harp on in the GG & DC threads, this teams need a hell of A LOT more skill in their bottom 6.
All bottom 6 forwards save for Bennett & Janko have almost totally no offensive skill. And that said, even Bennett & Janko have a ways to go.

Yep. They have needed long winning streaks. This is not a consistently good team.

Steinbergs wrong too. You can put all sorts of stipulation on picks traded. Some picks have been traded with top ten protection where the pick is defered to another year if it gets into the top ten. Other teams have had it protected that IF it wins the lottery, it the pick moved is defered to another year.
Same thing with other picks too, look at Trelivings body of work and Kerr thinks its all his fault that traded picks are complicated as they are now. X team gets a third but turns into a 2nd if they win a round in the playoffs etc etc.

Sure, that’s the way the results have gone, and indirectly, the results came in streaks the way the team is motivated by the coach with specific incidents to motivate as opposed to a more consistent, behind closed door approach.
But what are the other underlying issues or roster issues that have had this go south this year over last?
