Yeah he is likely well past his best before date, but he could be decent depending on what is going back the other way. If we are giving up a couple of young players I would extremely disappointed.

The Flames aren't going to be giving up anymore than a 3rd round pick in value.

I'm pretty sure the 1st round pick is in play here. The Flames seem so down on picks this year.

Wasn't my first choice. Or my second. Or even my third. BUT, he's still pretty good. Clearly a stop gap and won't be the goalie of the future, but he likely provides one thing that we've all been wishing for for years, solid goaltending. Might not be elite, but dependable.
Other than that, my thoughts on this depend entirely on the return

Didn't realize he's under contract until 2019 with a $5.7mil cap hit.
Assuming Elliott was an option and costs a 3rd, this better be a pretty slick trade.

If this is true, here are my hopes... - Bad contract going to Arizona
- Salary retained by Arizona
- Sean Burke as goalie coach
- Plan to acquire one of the young back-ups available to Vegas and run a 1A/1B tandem with Smith as the B

If it's a first going too the Coyotes, that is bad asset management.

It will be a nice trade. Dump some salary on them. Bouma or Stajan probably gone.

Depending on the cost I love it.
Didn't want the team to bring back Elliott - bad feel
Didn't want to over pay for a guy that really hasn't carried the ball.
Didn't want to sign a guy like Biship for 7x7.
I've thought for a while that the best option was Fleury, Smith or Howard as they all had 2 years left on their deal, an truthfully I liked Smith the most of that group because he was carrying the Coyotes.
So now ... the cost ....

Something to keep in mind - Smith is about the 17/18 and 18/19 seasons, whereas really Raanta/Grubauer were about the big picture going forward, and we already have our big picture guys here in Gillies and Parsons.
I like his move - assuming of course Gillies/Parsons/1st round pick aren't involved.

Elliott or MAF would have been absolutely lit up in Arizona too.

What makes people think Treliving would ever consider giving up our 1st for a 36 year old goaltender? What has Treliving ever done for you to think this?
