The next one was the Tehran hostage crisis. Followed that very closely. Then Mt St Helens - before we moved to Canada, we lived in a few places affected by the eruption - Slide Creek, Abernathy, Longview, Kalama. So that had some impact on my folks, more than me, but the story had an impact. Oh, and the the Pope John Paul II assassination attempt because it happened on my birthday.
I started making my own breakfast (peanut butter and jam sandwiches or cereal) when I was 8. I was always the first one up in the house and would turn on Canada AM while eating breakfast. The first major news story I remember is also the Iran hostage crisis, as well as the related energy crisis. Just remember Jimmy Carter being on the news all the time and footage of cars lining up for blocks for gasoline.
I remember walking to my friends house right after the Challenger blew up to pick him up on my way to school.
You might be mis-remembering this in part. It blew up at 9:39 Mountain time. I was in junior high science class and a teacher came in to tell my teacher what had happened, quietly, but we heard him quite clearly even though he whispered, "Did you hear, the shuttle blew up."
All I remember about St. Helens is, next day, a film of ash on every car (Medicine Hat).

I vividly remember freaking out taking a plane ride in 1981, fearing our plane would be hijacked, which was related to the airplane hijackings of the late 70s, early 80s. But that wasn't an actual news story I remember.
This is a Winnipeg-centric memory, but I was haunted as a kid by the murder of Candace Derksen, who was kidnapped and left to die in a shed in the middle of winter in 1984 (I had to look up the date). I still can recall seeing on TV the shed where they found her body and I had nightmares about it as a kid.
I remember Diana and how upset my mom was, but I was only 6 and it's vague. 9/11 at 10 years old is a huge bookmark in my memory, all memories after it are distinct and before it seem vague.
That's easy, I was two but I remember sitting on my dads lap watching it on a grainy TV with a wooden console.
That would be mine as well, the event was so big they opened a school gym and showed it on two tv's to most of our town as not everyone had a TV. I still remember a bunch of foam coolers that the men brought for the beer.
I was at summer camp when the Challenger was destroyed. The news didn't reach us so when I returned days later, it was very strange to hear about it days after the fact. Everyone assumed we knew and all of us were just stunned
Challenger broke apart in January so I'm not sure you are remembering the correct thing.

The attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan is the first thing I can think of. Happened 3 days after my 5th birthday while I was still living in Medicine Hat. I thought him being shot meant he got killed.
