Can't they just let him go and then re-sign him as a free agent for less than $4m?
Iirc, Flames did that with Byron.

if the flames had traded a 3rd rounder to get Byron so that he could go to free agency so the Flames could sign him it would be a debacle of monumental proportions.
I think the penguins are looking at a re-tool this offseason. Maybe move malkin.

I'd be worried if I was the Penguins. I think they hope he will show them that he has some sort of loyalty (I'm not saying he won't) but from his past experience I think he will test free agency.

I'm thinking he fails that test.

Yeah, in what world would you bank on that?

You can re-sign him for less before you even have to qualify him. He'd have to want to do that though. But why wouldn't you wanna sign to play with Sid and Malkin? Pens offer him 2.5 million 1 year lets say.

No it wouldn't...not even a little bit.
Pitt Trades for Schultz at 50% retained. Doesn't qualify him and lets him go free agent to sign him for less than the atrocious qualifying offer he is in line to get.
Pitt signs him for whatever contract they deem fit. Win for Pitt.
The only way this is a debacle of monumental proportions is if the don't qualify him and he signs with another team for what Pitt was willing to pay.

The Flames traded Robyn Regehr for Byron.

Orange Julius sez, the Flames traded Robyn Regehr to get him out of town before he could strangle Iginla. Byron was just a throw-in.
Looking back, I seriously think they traded the wrong guy. Iginla would have fetched a king's ransom in a trade at that time, and Regehr could have been a good captain to set an example of hard work and defensive responsibility for a rebuilding team.
Of course, I wasn't smart enough to see it with hindsight at the time. Somehow, one never is.

Could the Penguins take him to arbitration after this season?

Article 12.3(a) of the CBA says yes. In fact, they could take him to arbitration instead of giving him a qualifying offer.
However, the arbitrator is not allowed to award less than 85% of his last season's salary (including any bonuses). So the least Schultz would get at arbitration is $3,315,000 per year. I doubt that would be worth doing for the Penguins.

I've been following Schultz progress as a Pen.
In 45 games as an oiler:
45 gp, 3g, 7a, -22
In 13 games as a Pen
13 gp, 1g, 3a +8
He's playing about 6 minutes less per night as a Pen, essentially as a 3rd pairing guy. What you can say about him on the 3rd pairing is that suddenly he isn't as much of a defensive liability as he was as an Oiler...
i'm not sure he'll be the next Dubnyk, but it looks like he's fitting into a role he's never had to play before.

He's played every game and has had 4 points since coming over from Edmonton. I think he's also getting some looks on the pp as well.

No change in offence, and his +/- is improved by virtue of moving from a tire fire to the Pens. No real surprise there.

Maybe he can be savaged but he's a 25 year old with four NHL seasons under his belt and they are playing him like he's a 25 year old fresh out of the AHL. I don't think I would be looking at him as a cornerstone defenseman down the line but I suppose he could be a serviceable 4/5 tweener in the right situation.

In Edmonton he was the alleged starter of many of the fires. a hockey arsonist if you will.

When players leave Edmonton and have success, it's a bonus.
