Bob is a genius!! Can you imagine if he let Orts in tonight? The backlash he would have got! I expect to see Ortio in the next week and let him prove he is the #1 for us this year.
Right now it looks like we're a lot more than a number one goalie away from being competitive.
It can't hurt, but we need to figure out how to be better defensively, and how to be more dangerous offensively.

The only solace in tonight's outcome is actually seeing how much this one win meant to the Oil faithful in the Dome. We got to celebrate a playoff win just a few short months ago, while one regular season win in game 5 of the season appeared to be as special as a cup win to those fans. Counter intuitive, but it made me feel much better.
Well you just keep celebrating last seasons playoffs and others will celebrate the game they went to tonight. Seems pretty simple.
At the Dome tonight an Oiler fans rebuttal to my comment about the Oilers tanking year after year, after he celebrated the 4th goal in my face "yeah but now we're winning!"
McDavid has really brought out the closet Oiler fans I see. It was like Canucks fans threw on Oilers jerseys.
So is this a rebirth of the B.Sutter/Bouwmeester/Jokinen era? Team that made big changes in the offseason, predicted to have a top 5 defense core and contend for the division, but so underwhelming on the ice compared to on paper that it's mind boggling
The Flames can only ever seem to have good results if no one expects anything out of them, otherwise they just disappoint

Actually, what is simpler to understand is that the Oilers have been the worst pro sports franchise in the last 10 years.
Tonight , they beat the Flames for the the first time in the last 8 games the rivals have played.
Congratulations.
After mutual 1-4 starts the Flames have to make up 4 wins to make the playoffs based on last seasons playoff teams .
The Oilers?
40 points or 20 more wins.
I know who I am betting on.
Congrats on the win tonight.

Celebrating last seasons playoffs? Yes it was great fun...but it's a new season, who is still celebrating? yes the winner of tonight can celebrate a game, finally winning. One game. maybe wait till later...much later, to celebrate the big games, the big win.
Besides hating that now every broadcast for the next week will replace McDavid's fluke tip first goal footage with stuff from this game, my takeaways are:
-the bad ice (not an excuse for crapping the bed tonight) hurt the Flames in their breakouts; the oilers aren't going to slam the body on the forecheck, but they are quick with their sticks, so when the puck is bouncing so much they get chances.
-Flames could play heavier and take the body more aggressively. It might be good if featherweights like nugent-hopkins are hearing footsteps when they get the puck.
-Oilers are really really bad on face-offs. Like the worst I've seen in years.
-McDavid's penalty in the third was the exact same annoying hooking pursuit that Gretzky did throughout his career, but the rules won't let this happen now.
-Where were all the greaser fans hiding? Must've been up in the nosebleeds because all you could see was the sea of red on the broadcast.
-Yes the Gio rehab took a step back tonight, but I think it doesn't help that he's trying to do damage control all the time being paired with Hamilton.
I agree with burn_this_city. Blow it up now. We're obviously doomed.
FFS, people, we survived an eight-game losing streak and losing our captain and still found a way. It is early yet. Have some faith. Like another poster said, 15 games in and not at .500...yeah, time to worry. .500 at the 15-game mark and we're good to see what we're really made of. Games 15-35 is where we see what we have. Get there at .500 and I'm still chill.

No one is celebrating last years playoffs anymore. Just commenting to the perspective and value of this one win. Seems to mean more to one side than would be expected for game 5 of the regular season. Congrats on your 1-4 start.
Just read the post game oilers thread on another board and a bunch of the greaser faithful are ragging on the horrible anti-oiler coverage; one guy even complaining the announcers ignored McDavid's great game.
With the downturn in oil prices they must be buying the discount crack there now.
