Unless the oilers package this first, penguins win hands down. They just got a young rw whose already proven he can put up points. Play him with Crosby or Malkin and hell put up 60-80 points a season and he's young enough to play there for 5+ years. Solid move.

Yeah you hope that a late first rounder in the 25-30 range will turn into a player as good as Perron.
With the Oilers development record they would have been better off getting a piece that was already developed in a different organization.

Keep in mind Pittsburgh got a player in Perron, maybe 1 of the 23 on Edmontons roster that isn't totally destroyed yet as he wasn't developed by them and still remained a decent player through the storm. Its a team game, Crosby couldn't turn the oilers around

We are at the half way point of the season, if the Oilers were making personal moves to try and make a playoff push and improve the record, they'd be idiots.
There is a huge difference between what moves they should be making at the "Management" level and at the "Player / coaching" level. Management, should be doing what they did today, it's smart. At the on ice level, for the players and coaches who are on the team, they need to be busting their ass in practice and in every game trying to win, getting better and starting to build a culture that is not one of losing.
Don't get me wrong, I understand a huge part of why this has gone so bad for them, is that management did the opposite of what Calgary has done early in their rebuild, and actually (seemingly) encouraged or at least accepted a culture of losing at the Player / Coach level, and that's what they need to correct. But from a management level, a team with as few a wins as they have in this season should not be looking to make trades or player moves that do anything but improve their club a few years down the road, no matter how long they've been at the "rebuild".

Still prefer to rip them. The problem for them is that they claimed they were not looking to move players for magic beans, but that is exactly what they did.
Has Mac T given a press conference? Should be gold...

Klinkhammer's been in two trades in about 3 weeks and I'm pretty sure he was included in both just so neither team would adding or subtracting a contract both times.

Bah...... Basically what you are saying is edmonton should fold. According to Cp they will ruin whoever they draft and will ruin any player they receive in trade or ufa.
I have loved seeing the train wreck that edmonton was this year, but I want that crap to stop. I want the old battle of Alberta to be back.

Getting a first rounder for a guy who didn't want to be there is not too bad of a trade. They had to move him. I don't know how much better they were going to do. It's hard to make a trade of a top six forward for another top six forward or top four dman. Those trades don't happen a lot mid season.
And for the people saying that it's apparent they are tanking now. It's not like he was helping them. They suck anyway and are probably going to pick top three again no matter what. They tanked for so long that they can't untank anymore. So I guess their solution is more tanking.

You are probably right, but we've all seen crazy stuff at the deadline.
And eventually even Garth Snow built a contender, infinite monkeys at infinite type-writers style, so maybe MacT will too.
This Oilers team is in Douglas Adams territory now, they are a satire of a pro sports team.

Honestly if the Oilers make another trade like this the NHL should launch an investigation like they did a few years ago with Ottawa and if they determine that they're intentionally making the team worse should set a precedence and strip the Oilers of their first round pick.
This is utter bs, and yes its pretty clear that the management is not trying to win games, and have just made massive steps to make their team worse.
At the end of the day the message that the players are getting from this trade is that losing is their mission.
The only guy at the end of the day that's going to want to win is Nelson even though trades like this will ensure that he's fired at the end of the year.
This is just going further in proving that Mac-T and their management group are a complete embarrassment.
Oiler fans do have my sympathy, there's no way that they should pay NHL prices to watch that team. If the Oilers had integrity they'd drop their ticket prices to ten bucks a game.

They still can. It's not written in stone that they have to use the 1st and draft someone. They could trade that 1st for a player that would help them more next year at the draft.

I would take Garth Snow as an NHL GM over Mac-T.

As much as I hate them, I'd prefer if the BOA games were actual battles. And yes I do think they'll find a way to ruin picks but they should be targeting players that are playing now and vets that can help the team move forward. They're keeping their management and scouting the same so they're just going to ruin or waste whatever picks they get anyway.
As others mentioned, they should target players playing now that can step in and help while they ship out players that aren't helping.

So what you're saying is to strip every team that trades their roster players for draft picks? The oilers are a bad team and the only way they can improve is to "rebuild" once again.

Ok return by the Oilers. They'll screw up the pick anyway.
Has a Sutter ever played for the Oilers? Not that I can think of and although Duane I think is a scout, I think it's fairly telling that now 8 members of the most respected large hockey family, known for playing with courage, heart, emotion, integrity and honestly, has never suited up in that jersey over the past 40 years. No way Brandon wanted to be the first even if the Pens were considering it.

You have to admit looking at the Oilers draft record that it is a hope and a prayer for a 20 goal player. Trading top six forwards for draft picks isn't something the Oilers should be doing at this stage of the rebuild.

Perron is miles better than Klinkhammer.

Fair point, and it's obviously impossible to give the Oilers the benefit of the doubt anymore.
If they are able to turn around and package this to fill a real hole (Perron although not a "problem" certainly wasn't a true solution to anything, then I get behind the move.
If the idea is to simply collect picks and wait 5 years for them to turn into something, then we can all just sit back smoking cigars while we look down at them below the Flames in the standings.
