Developments like the Osteria de Medici (and ones like Strategic on 4th, Hanson Square, St. John's) are the ones that excite me. These are the ones that add true vibrancy at street level.
Big towers are cool and all, but they're just towers with no street presence.

The big towers can have street presence, and at least the very least they create demand for things that have street presence.

Also - looks like the CBE building was bought and the purchaser is looking to develop the area.
Due to its location, I don't think (this is what Nenshi said) the shadowing issues related to building height will be a factor

I'd have to say the bolded part is not true. The CBE site sits a block east of the Bow building, the Bow river and its pathways continue to trend SE as you go east. So the pathway will be slightly closer than it is from the Bow building. Thus you won't be able to build any height you want on that parcel, it would probably end up pretty close to the height of the Bow as a max, perhaps a little shorter.

Yeah, I wasn't sure. Just what Nenshi said on the 6 o'clock news

Looks like we missed a story here:
http://www.calgaryherald.com/busines...799/story.html

Consisting of an 11-storey podium and two glass towers rising to 850 feet [sic, it's actually going to be 525], it was designed by the Calgary office of NORR architects.

They can't build towers in Eau Claire that high because of the shadowing law no? I was hoping that the Peace Bridge and The Bow would up the bar ... but that building looks pretty ordinary

If it's 525 feet tall, it will be shorter than both Centennial Place (542 feet) and Canterra Tower (581 feet). It will also be a block south of those buildings.

Right, but I'm referring to the article saying it's 850 feet.

Yup, the article is wrong. Plain and simple.
Given that David Parker wrote the article I'm amazed he wasn't lamenting the potential loss of another parking lot.

It will fit in just nicely with the Centennial buildings, which I think are a nice classy modern design. This building looks even more bold (with the curves and different widths going up).
Plus, anything that doesn't look like the old Encana building is a victory in my books.

Every time I look at Centennial I, I wish they had simply built a mirrored Canterra instead.

I love Canterra, but the last thing we need are more twins.
Yes I realize how stupid this sounds since Centennial is a twin tower complex, at least they turned the two buildings 90 degrees from each other.

Well, maybe if Centennial was something different I would agree, but because of its height and colour, I still see it as a twin, but an uglier fraternal one.
I also wish Bankers Hall II was the same colour as Bankers Hall I.

The Bow is fat, the non-sole sorced pedestrian bridge is uninspired, my preferred design for the national music centre is not they one they picked, and the Calgary tower needs to be made taller.
