^ We have similar tastes. Also my favourites. Interestingly they are both memorials.
The first one is a statue called Mother with her Dead Son by Käthe Kollwitz and is intended to be a memorial to all victims of facism and nazism. The reason the back of the photograph is lit is because there is a hole cut in the roof so the statue will always be exposed to the elements as the victims were.
The second is taken between the pilars in the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

Love that first one, Chris. Same to you, Regulator. I can never get landscapes down. Mine always come out hazy and faded. This is probably due to my lack of polarized filter on my zoom. I should get on that.
These were taken on the way home from Kelowna. From a moving car, so they're a tad blurred;

So i went outside to water the new sod... saw a massive spider eating a dragonfly. Then my wife got all squeamish when she saw this massive dragonfly eating the head off another, much smaller one. I hate bugs and insects... dear god. Wish i had a good macro lens.

Not saying anything about Chris or Regulator, but I suspect a lot of what you like is post-processing (and time-of-day).

Landscapes are super easy for me, I find portraits quite difficult and dealing with people can be annoying too.
A Polarizer can help when shooting in harsh light. I typically shoot landscapes between f/8 and f/13 and try to remember to use spot metering, depending where the sun is and what not.

Second one is awesome. I like the tones and composition. Looks like a real nice building.

all the snowbird pics were right out of the camera - no post-processing, no editing, no cropping
i guess sometimes you just get lucky?!?!
i was using my 70-200mm 2.8 with a 2x extender - so i was shooting at f5.6
the other thing that helped was that the sun was behind me. i had friends taking the exact same pics on the kelowna side of the lake and they had issues becuz they were shooting into the sun

i was at a lacrosse final earlier this week. i'm guessing it was the valley championships?
kelowna raiders vs armstrong shamrocks
i've never taken lacrosse pics and have only ever seen a few games and i don't even pretend to understand the rules, so i don't know what makes a 'great' lacrosse shot.
anyways, here are a few pics...
