Lots more coming up online now that the embargo is up. And more as the week goes on. Probably my last reading for tonight on Arstechnica below:
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/1...om-revolution/
Xbox One review: More than a game console, less than a living room revolution
Limited multitasking and voice commands aren't worth an extra $100 on their own.
Conclusion
As a video game console, the Xbox One offers about what you'd expect from a new Microsoft console: a big, heavy box (though quieter than you might expect), more impressive specs (though less than what you might expect after eight years), an improved controller (though still with a few odd oversights), and some good exclusive games (more reviews are coming but look into Dead Rising 3, Forza 5, Powerstar Golf, and Zoo Tycoon). As the central hub of a living room entertainment complex, though, Microsoft has a much harder sell. The company needs to prove the Xbox really adds enough value to be worthwhile and to justify the extra cost of the included Kinect over its similar competition.
At this point, the voice control and multitasking functions that are meant to really set the Xbox One apart are just shy of being good enough to really push the system over the top. They're nice conveniences, to be sure, but there are enough kinks in the execution to limit their effectiveness. Even if those are smoothed out with future updates, it's unclear that these features are worth $100 (though that reason is separate from any compelling exclusive games or visual/computational powerhouses).
In short, buy an Xbox One if and when there are enough exclusive games to convince you it's worth the expense. At that point, the extra media features that the Xbox One brings to the table will be nice fringe benefits, and these options may be more stable and usable than they are right now. If you can live without those platform exclusives, though, and if you can do without fancy picture-in-picture and voice commands, look into saving some money on a PlayStation 4 instead.
The good
- System is nearly silent when running.
- Relatively energy efficient.
- Great looking lighting effects and detailed characters.
- Redesigned analog sticks, shoulder buttons, and d-pad are incredibly comfortable.
- Improved rumble motor and new rumbling triggers.
- Instant-on mode goes from power button to loaded game incredibly quickly.
- Clean, sparse menu helps you find what you need efficiently.
- Voice can be extremely efficient for launching games and apps and searching.
- Snapping video is the new picture-in-picture.
- Switching between apps is fast and snappy.
- Upload studio is a great little clip editor.
- TV pass-through is lag-free and easy to use.
The bad
- Case is boxy, heavy, and about as big as the original Xbox.
- Many launch games don't pack much of a visual punch.
- Controller still uses AA batteries and proprietary headsets.
- Voice commands fail a good 10 to 20 percent of the time.
- System requires incredible precision in what voice commands it will take.
- Voice is cumbersome and annoying in many apps.
- Most apps are nearly useless in snap mode.
The ugly
- Kinect auto-login works inconsistently.
- In-game recording was largely busted on my review unit.
- Switching from game to game can delete unsaved data without warning.
- Kinect IR remote doesn't have a learning function for unsupported hardware.
Verdict: Buy it if there are exclusives that appeal to you, not for the bells and whistles. Otherwise, save $100 and get a PS4.

Really pushing the decision for majority of people to wait and see what will happen with both consoles in the coming updates. XB1 sounds like there's a lot of potential in the future, much of which I'm interested in even though I'll be getting a PS4, but disappointing to hear that the software isn't quite there yet.

Ordered my Xbox day 1 edition directly from Microsoft in September; got notice on Sunday that it is on its way. currently sitting with UPS in Ontario, California.
I know that the software will change just as it has with the 360 so I think that the reviews are fair enough as they do mention that. no console can squeeze everything in perfectly for launch without a patch.
I must be getting old though; in the past I would have hoped for one console to dominate but now I am hoping that we see equally good games and applications on both systems.

Getting pretty bloody stoked. I wish I'd made my decision to start out with the Xbone earlier, as I'd have liked to have a Day One edition (I've been Xbox'ing since day one on November 15th, 2001 for cripes' sake!). I wavered back and forth for quite a few weeks (and originally had the PS4 pre-ordered) but switched it to the One early in October, by which time the Day Ones had all pretty much dried up.
Oh well, green box and generic controller it is, I guess.

my intention all along was to monitor the public response to both systems, before getting it next year when the first next-gen nhl game comes out.
It's getting tough to decide at this stage, though i find it hard not to lean towards the xbox considering i have been an xbox player for 8 years now...

- Meh. All of that can be fixed with software updates, either to the console or the applications. Launch titles weren't all that mind-blowing on the Xbox 360 or PS3 IIRC.

In any of the reviews does it mention what happens when you plug your Xbox 360 in the HDMI in?
Edit: Well here's a whole article about that... http://kotaku.com/you-can-play-an-xb...-an-1467884928

No different than the PS3 currently not supporting 3D movies. We know an update will be coming to add it and as long as the hardware capability is there I have no doubt all the Kinect bugs will be worked out in relatively short order. Those negatives are actually pretty weak IMO as for all we know half of them could be alleviated in the first update.

LOL at all these skeptics. I don't care if people like PS4s or Xboxes. They are both going to be great. It's like critics and nerds out there think the consoles should come with a free BJ or something. Settle down.

I agree, the Wii:U has some very fun looking games coming out over the next month or so and I am far more likely to buy that then either the PS4 or One.

If you can find one of the discontinued Wii U Basic bundles you can usually get them for cheap. Best Buy had them for $179 a few months back, and I believe target had them as low ass $149 at one point.
Might be hard to find but worth a shot if you can get one cheap just to play Nintendo first party games.

Good to know, it looks like some places have them ~$250, wonder if they'll drop again. Definitely more console exclusive titles worth playing on the Wii U than the other 2 at the moment.

I go where the JRPGs go. I'll probably be getting a WiiU once the new Xeno game from Monolithsoft is out, a PS4 whenever the new FFXV or new Tales game comes out, and an Xbox One when Mistwalker or some other developer makes an exclusive for it.

Yeah Wii U's are so low right now. If you want used they are $150-$200. New you can find them for $200 with no games or $299 with Mario and luigi games.
I was in the market to sell mine but with the prices this low I'm better off just keeping it and trying some good games when they come out.
