Taking a while to get to 5000
|
7-10 days. That puts a timeline to the draft lottery. Maybe firings, maybe a trade.

What "crap"? I seriously do not get why people are so personally invested in the timing of the Flames' decisions this month.

Guess I'm old school. I believe if your going to fire somebody you don't linger with your decision. It might not be GG but no chance Cameron is back

I heard the conversation and it was largely just speculation and not any "scoop".

The Burke thing I can see happening and I wouldn't be surprised. Don Maloney
takes over as President of hockey operations next season. If the Flames suck again Treliving probably gets booted and Maloney takes over GM/President. I see that scenario playing out if next year is a disaster.

Why the Hate on Peters? He's won at every level up to the NHL.
Metropolitan division is tough.

Our transition to the Phoenix Coyotes would be complete.

Well, no. He actually has not.
He won a WHL championship and a Memorial Cup and has had some Int'l success, but he had three seasons in the AHL that were underwhelming.

How about a coach who has had success in the NHL? If Peters had made the playoffs 2/4 seasons and had a pretty decent record I would say why not. But nothing shows me that he should be the next Flames head coach.

I think there are some concerns since the Hurricanes are 1 game below .500 and 26th in the league in points % in his time there.
They also ranked 28th in GF/G, and 20th in GA/G.
A lot of that has to do with them ranking 30th in Shooting Percentage, and 31st in save percentage but with the way this season went it's somewhat concerning seeing a guy that has had similar issues to what the Flames had this year but over 4 years instead of 1 season.
Specials teams are a mixed bag. 26th ranked PP, and 5th ranked PK over that time - so we would need to find a coach to fix the PP. Something he hasn't been able to do in Carolina.
He is well regarded as a coach for the most part across the league and gets lots of love from Hockey Canada, plus his advanced stats are top 5 in the league over that time, but once again it's just a 4 year pattern of what failed the Flames this season for Peters so is that just more of the same.
I'm not really against it since I think he's a better coach than GG, and I'm not sure Sutter or AV are real options here, but he wouldn't be my 1st choice and I'd probably wait to see if anybody else gets fired after the 1st round of the playoffs.

To be frank, none of us is in any position to be making an informed decision here, so it is unsurprising that we don't see what a GM may see.
I don't really have a strong opinion about whether or not he would be a good choice to coach the Flames, but I do think it is interesting that Peters is tagged so often by Hockey Canada: he won at Ivan Hlinka in 2008, he won at the 2016 IIHF Championships, and has been selected to coach there again this year. I did not realize that he was an Asst. Coach of the Team Canada 2016 World Cup entry along with Trotz, Quenneville, and Julien.

Part of the current impression of this team comes from the fact they cashed out pretty early and the hockey was extra-uninspiring from the Tkachuk injury to the end of the season as a result. It's hard to judge the system from that point because the players just weren't trying hard enough IMO.
|
The last part of the season may have amplified the impression but there were plenty of posters calling out the team style long before the injuries hit.

But even those calls I suspect were amplified by impressions, given how fragile the Flames appeared when they would surrender a goal.

He is an innovator too.
His defensive zone coverage is quite different than traditional hockey, with his weak side defensive forward crossing the zone to help out instead of covering his high dman like a glove.
Really high puck pursuit and force turnover with the willingness to give up the through the legs pass to the blueliner as a downside.

They can get rid of Ken King too and maybe the Arena discussions could get back on track.
I honestly don’t think anything happens this season unfortunately.

Seems like my intel was a little off on timeline of the coach. Sorry.
I still expect it to happen.
My source also told me (as of April 1st) that he expected Tippett to be the coach next year in Dallas. That also looks very likely.
