On what day do teams have to be cap compliant?

I thought you were allowed to spend beyond the cap in the off season. Either way it's dumb, smid won't play so the flames should have the cap space now.

If that's the holdup, it'd explain the rumours of us trying to pay to unload Smid now as opposed to just wait for LTIR.

Even if they send Vey ($700k) down, it'll be REALLY tough for #Flames to sign Gaudreau without LTIR for Smid.
Silver lining maybe the Flames have to wait until LTIR for Gaudreau's deal getting announced?
|
they can also send down Kulak and either recall him or sign Grossmann on opening day.

I'm sure the Flames owners will get by.

I don't mean to sound all negative, but I'm starting to get a really bad feeling about this whole situation, even worse than before. I get the feeling that the talks didn't go well. The fact that they still aren't close after a whole week of face to face meetings makes me think Calgary is completely stuck on this Gio cap nonsense. Then add in comments from TSN (Button and Ferraro) that makes it sound like a trade request might be not too far away.
Do we know if Burke was on the trip with Treliving? I really hope not. He's a loose cannon and could completely destroy the relationship with the Gaudreau family.
I hope I'm wrong. But I'm just not feeling there is more uncertainty than ever about Johnny's future in Calgary.

Flames could also send down Sam Bennett temporarily to get $925k in cap space until Smid is put on LTIR.

If Gaudreau isn't signed, they're nowhere near the cap. They need to have him signed in order to put Smid on LTIR.

I would doubt that his RFA years would be over 6.5m per year, so that shouldn't be a problem. I'm sure they could easily structure the contract so that they would be below 6.633m this year.

Cap hit is the average annual value over the entire contract. Doesn't matter what his actual salary is for this first year to fit under the cap, its the AAV which will exceed $6.633 if he's signing 7 or 8 years.

If that were to happen and the Islanders came looking for Gaudreau would you take Strome, Pulock, Barzal and a first round pick in the 2017 or the 2018 draft?

He's a Devils fan. He doesn't care how badly we get fleeced.

I think EF was referring to when he asked BT about the "Flames haven't contacted us in a month" comment Gross made. I don't think it was about the negotiations in general.
