I provided examples of the increasing technological impact of advertising on our lives and concluded this required a correction though strong regulations or even violent revolution (I'd just read Fight Club).

I got an A- on the paper with feedback from the professor that stuck with me. He noted I had focused on solutions to the problem of increased advertising but failed to note that humans are very adaptive and another option is that we all just get used to increased advertising and move on with our lives. I'm thinking the helmet and division ads fall into this. Sure there will be a bit of outrage and bemoaning the ever increasing hold of advertising but most fans will become comfortable with the changes.

I agree. People hate everything and then get used to it and then can't live without it. Talking Movies, Soda in Can. Why would anyone want their profile on the internet? Why would i want to watch tv on my 5 inch phone? This is called the dumb idea paradox.

I'm sure the first time the idea of instant replay was introduced in the 70s people were like, "Why cut away from live action to show me something I just saw! That's stoopid!" Now we wait for the replay and curse if there isn't one.

Just wait until NHL teams are actually named after a sponsor.

It seems to be coming more common in Asia and Europe, and it isn't unheard of in North America either. The Green Bay Packers for example were named after a company, although the company no longer exists. The Windsor Spitfires are another.

I wonder what type of revenue jersey sales bring in, because I can tell you I’d never be buying one again for the rest of my life if it’s just an advertisement.

I don't know, but the Arsenal Fly Emirates jerseys are one of the top selling in the world. As are the Manchester United Chevrolet jerseys.

Spoiler!

I think that MU is #1 and Arsenal is #5 in the world as far as sports jersey sales go.

Part of that is probably fans being used to the ads by now. EPL teams have had ads for almost 40 years now, younger fans probably have never seen a jersey without an ad on it.

You can buy NBA jerseys with the ad patch on them but they’re the highest price point which doesn’t really make sense. I have seen people wearing them though.

Modern arena’s are built by taxpayer money for the disproportionate benefit of corporations so it makes sense that the teams would be named after corporations. Plus it is another revenue stream, which is the most important thing.

Coming from the UK I was pretty blown away by all the smaller advertising in hockey and actually found that more disruptive than anything in soccer. The premier league and leagues below that have changed sponsors quite a few times I think and it's not really noticeable. People just call it the premier league every year.

The sponsors on soccer jerseys I'm fine with having grown up with them and them being reasonably "clean" (though they're mostly betting websites these days, which looks pretty cheap). Saying that, I love how clean the hockey jerseys are and would very like them to stay that way.

I’m sure my aversion to professional soccer stems from some deeply seeded disdain that your team logo is a footnote to the logos of the largest corporations in the world.
Paying for the price large of wearing a billboard for a company that couldn’t give two ####s about your favourite franchise outside of ad revenue seems horrid.

It was always that small before shirt advertising became a thing (I think in the early 80s). Doesn't mean I don't think it looks tacky.

I think part of the reason it flies with soccer is because teams are identified more by their colours and patterns than by logos, kind of like football. The pitches are so big that it makes sense colours and patterns would be more important than logos..

That left the center of the jersey as prime real estate for advertising once it became a thing teams do.

I don't see the big deal here. People may not remember this, but the original idea behind "Three Stars of the Game" was a marketing scheme. It was designed to promote the best players in the game AND to sell gasoline.

Also, the WHA sold the naming rights to their championship trophy almost 50 years ago.

With all this talk, I have a question. We know for soccer that it's not a sport that can have commercial breaks in between halves because of it's continuous flow, so the ads on jerseys and such is how they compensate. Does European hockey have the same amount of commercials in the middle of periods just like North American hockey does?

I can’t tell is this an amazing critique on the concept of emotional attachment to sports or disliking additional advertising. I much prefer it to be the former

A Flames Logo is just an advertisement for a corporation that we have an emotional attachment to. Adding in an additional ad by a corporation who supports the corporation we have an emotional attachment to shouldn’t be the deal breaker.

The trophy's naming rights were sold to the former Avco Corporation (a name originally derived from "Aviation Company"), a defense contractor who bought the rights to advertise their consumer finance division.
