It's just an extra season of $1.5 million buying him out now. Really not a big deal at all.

The Flames now don't have any terrible contracts. If Frolik doesn't rebound from the past season, his contract could be considered bad. I know some posters don't like Stone but $3 million is fair for him.

Bennett, Hamonic, and Frolik in that order.

Lots of questions about Peters as well if the team doesn’t turn it around.

For me it comes down to acknowledging your own mistakes. That's how you get better, and Brouwer being bought-puy is Treliving acknowledging his mistake and not allowing it to continue. Sure, there's a penalty to pay - but it's better than the alternative.

It's better to carry an empty $1.5M for 4 years, than having a line-ruining $4.5M for even one more year in my eyes.

This team HAS to start winning. You can't win when Troy Brouwer is almost single-handedly sabotaging an entire line. In this league you need to be able to roll four effective lines, and Brouwer's presence makes that much more difficult/impossible.

I imagine Brouwer will end up on a cheap deal in either Washington, St. Louis or Chicago - teams that at one time valued him and who could see it as a cheap depth move...or Vancouver will sign him to a 4 year, 18M dollar contract. It could really go either way.

Its an extra 2 years of $1.5m by buying him out this year rather than next year.

This years buyout = 4 x $1.5m.

Next years buyout = 2 x $1.5m.

I don’t remember management ever backhanding the Flames harder than Treliving has this offseason. Finally I think we see a squad that comes out of the gate flying.

Unfortunately, he's at $3.5M. His contract would be fair at $3M, as you suggest. Plus he's blocking the promotion of Andersson. IMO the only reason to hang on to him is as insurance for injuries.

The whipping boys often end up being those over-utilized by the coach. For that reason, my money is on Ryan. That said, I am quite excited about having him on the team - seems quite versatile and a little like Frolik

This is going to reduce the team's ability to buy out other contracts or to take on contracts for next 4 years...
Sure, but given the fact that 23 NHL teams are presently paying players not to play, this still does not seem especially significant in the grand scheme of things.

Well, buying him out now means the cap hit is $1.5, $1.5, $1.5, 1.5.

Buying him out next year is $4.5, $1.5, $1.5, $0.

So, in exchange for $1.5 million in dead cap space in 2021-22, we reclaim $3 million in cap space this year AND we open a roster spot for a better player.

That's a bargain at this point.

It's the hap hap happiest time of the year. In this case the best Aug 2 ever.
Thank you thank you thank you Flames management for coming to this decision. Later overpaid, over used lethargic Brouwer!
No send off no memories I already have moved on.
Opens up a valuable roster spot cant wait to see which one of the new guys fills it.
Look at the 3m cap space this opens as mentioned above, fantastic.

Why was this ridiculous? Brouwer was a NHL veteran with several years of playoff experience and a Stanley Cup championship playing on a team comprised of a tonne of young players.

Brouwer is not a great hockey player, but there was never anything controversial about his sporting a letter. I continue to be mystified about how worked up some fans get about a team's alternates.

Plus this year at 4.5 so it’s only an extra year at 1.5

Call it a creepy premonition, but absolutely no kidding, I was 100% sure this would be the first thread title up when I opened CP this morning...

I wasn't commenting on whether it was a good move, just pointing out its not $1.5m for an additional year when looked at in the context of a buy out this year vs next.

Treliving will have run through every scenario so if he deems the buyout advantageous this year I'm happy to trust his judgement.

When the team has been critical of it's own culture and leadership, it opens the door for fans to also be critical of it.

Gully specifically called out some of his veterans during his stick throwing tantrum - and in my eyes, that was directed towards Brouwer (and possibly Stajan). Teams need strong leaderships, and Alternates impact that.

He might get a show me deal or a tryout, but I don't think he's long for the NHL anymore.

Two issues with this (not an attack)

No one ever plans on problems, they arise. It's like saying yes to the Brick for a new suite of bedroom furniture and not paying a cent for 24 months. The 24 months come.

Secondly, nobody sets out to play fourth liners too much. They sign or trade for players to play in their 2nd and 3rd lines and they falter.
